The BMW Group has once again captured the spotlight at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este with the debut of its BMW Concept Skytop. This annual event, renowned for celebrating historic cars and motorcycles, provided the perfect backdrop for BMW’s latest design study, an exquisite and unique vehicle.
The BMW Concept Skytop, an open two-seater, boasts a meticulously sculpted form that combines sporty elegance with an athletic, muscular stance. The car’s design features warm monochromatic colors and a blend of exclusive materials with traditional craftsmanship, both inside and out.
Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, expressed his enthusiasm: “The BMW Concept Skytop is a truly unique and exotic design, in the tradition of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. It offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level, comparable to its historic ancestors, like the BMW Z8 or BMW 503.”
Designed to inspire a passion for travel, the BMW Concept Skytop’s exterior features taut, muscular surfaces defined by precise lines that flow toward the rear. Innovative winglets, discreetly integrated into the door shoulders, replace traditional door handles, while light alloy wheels with precise lamellas enhance its unique aesthetic.
From above, the car’s prominent sweeping bonnet, iconic BMW shark-nose design with illuminated kidney grille, and retracted rear section are striking. Careful references to the legendary BMW Z8 roadster include a pronounced spline extending from the bonnet through the interior to an aluminum trim on the tailgate, emphasizing the dynamic silhouette.
The harmonious headlight design integrates complex details with the overall concept. Custom-developed LED units on milled aluminum carriers utilize the latest technology, achieving the slimmest profile for automotive headlights. The flat and defined rear lights complement the car’s streamlined appearance.
Inside, the BMW Concept Skytop continues its luxury theme with brogue-style leather accents on the seats, creating a consistent color scheme of reddish-brown tones. This palette extends a sense of spaciousness and elegance throughout the interior. Crystal applications in the cockpit add an artful touch, while traditional craftsmanship from the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing ensures impeccable quality.
The leather-finished roll-over bar behind the seats, side fins on the B-pillar, and a fully retractable rear window add to the car’s refined design. Removable, leather-finished roof parts can be stored in a special compartment in the luggage space, ensuring a smooth transition between open and closed configurations.
The exterior paintwork transitions from a reddish-brown roof to a muted silver with a chrome shadow effect, crafted by a master painter at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. This technically elaborate color gradient seamlessly blends the interior and exterior design elements.
Mirroring the engine variants of the iconic BMW Z8, the BMW Concept Skytop is equipped with the most powerful V8 engine in BMW’s drivetrain portfolio. It promises exhilarating performance that complements its sophisticated design.
With the BMW Concept Skytop, BMW continues to push the boundaries of automotive elegance and performance, making a stunning statement at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
