The BYD Sealion 6 DM-i aims to reshape the hybrid market – First Drive

BYD has been on a roll recently, ever since the acquisition by ACMobility (formerly AC Motors) the Chinese brand has pushed itself into the consciousness of the local market through their affordable quality EVs.

Something new is afoot though, and the latest vehicle to join the brand’s stable is a curious but well worth case. Meet the Sealion 6 DM-i.

First off, the Sealion 6 is a crossover aimed squarely at the Tuscon, CR-V, and Rav4 hybrids while being affordable enough to also compete against the likes of the Ford Territory.

Size-wise the Sealion 6 is more than decent inside and out, the proportions are just right. When it comes to looks I really appreciate the effort BYD went through just to make the Sealion 6 standout in a subtle way. It possesses some sculpted lines along the exterior and angular elements as well, it’s modern and classy.

Inside is where things take a more adventurous turn, the unit we were able to drive had a cream and navy blue leather color combination which was a treat to look at, complimenting the eye-catching color combo is the contrasting orange stitches found around the interior. I have to commend BYD for the interior fit and finish, it is one of the best I’ve ever come across, not to mention the materials used for the interior panels feel good to touch and top grade, I was really impressed by the quality.

Other creature comforts include the massive 15.6-inch rotating screen which was huge, crisp, clear, and responsive, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ventilated and heated front seats, panoramic sunroof, and dual wireless charging pads. Needless to say, it’s filled to the brim with features.

What is DM-i?

DM-i is BYD’s latest technology for powertrains, basically, it is a hybrid system that leans more into EV technology as well. DM-i gives the Sealion 6 an estimated range of 1,100 plus kilometers (combined EV and gasoline) and 105 kilometers (Full EV mode). The gasoline engine is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated unit that only acts as a range extender or charger should the battery need more juice. Also, it was explained to us that the DM-i only uses the engine under extreme loads or speeds.

The Sealion 6 also has plug-in capability so you can top-up the battery at any charging station should you want to. Combined

In terms of driving impressions, I have to say that the Sealion 6 ticks all the right boxes. It is comfortable, quiet, and very much refined for something in this class. I enjoyed the ease with which it can be operated, it isn’t overly complicated, and the car is easy to get used to. It also comes with the brand’s latest ADAS system with adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and others.

It gives you the best of the EV performance of instant torque, and serenity but without the range anxiety.

Price and final impressions

The best thing about the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i is the price, this fully hybrid and feature-laden crossover costs PHP 1,548,000. That is a massive discount compared to all the other hybrids in its class that I mentioned above, and to be honest it feels just as good as them.

The Sealion 6 is more than just a quality item, it can actually challenge the established marks already in the market. I can’t wait to get my hands on it for a full review, stay tuned.
