The initial glimpses of Xiaomi’s SU7 Electric Vehicle (EV) have emerged through images published by a Chinese government regulatory agency, offering a preview ahead of its official unveiling. The regulatory filings accompanying these images disclose various specifications, encompassing the car’s dimensions, weight, power output, manufacturing details, and the range of models available upon launch.
Contrary to expectations, Xiaomi is not directly involved in the car’s production; instead, Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC), a Chinese government-owned car manufacturer, will undertake the manufacturing process on a contractual basis. This confirmation aligns with earlier speculations that circulated over a year ago.
The SU7’s design and features provide insight into its market positioning. With a 2997 mm wheelbase and a fastback roofline, resembling the Tesla Model S in packaging, albeit with a slightly longer wheelbase, the SU7 is tailored to cater to the Chinese market’s affinity for long-wheelbase versions of mid-size luxury sedans. In terms of overall length, it nearly matches the Model S, making it a natural point of comparison.
While power specifications and curb weights have been disclosed, the regulatory filings need to include details regarding the range and battery capacity. The SU7 will be available in a single-motor Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant, generating approximately 295 hp and weighing around 1980 kg. The premium All-Wheel Drive (AWD) dual-motor version boasts 663 hp and a heavier weight of 2205 kg, attributed to an additional motor and a larger battery. Furthermore, there is a distinction in battery chemistries, with the standard version equipped with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack and the premium variant featuring a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery.
Images from the regulatory filing reveal that certain trims of the SU7 will incorporate a prominent lidar array on the roof, presumably intended for driver assistance and autonomous features. The available trims at launch include the SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max, with an additional subvariant named Founders Edition.
As a Chinese brand primarily catering to the domestic market, Xiaomi’s plans regarding international sales are still being determined. However, the involvement of state-owned BAIC in manufacturing enhances the credibility of an imminent launch, with Xiaomi aiming for availability in early 2024 and manufacturing slated to commence before the end of 2023.
