Quick Guide: Driver’s License Codes required to legally drive certain motorcycles, tricycles

As we all know, there are specific Driver’s License Codes that are needed to legally drive either a motorcycle or a tricycle in the Philippines. Depending on what kind of 2- or 3-wheeler it is, you will need Code A or Code A1 printed on your license, lest you risk being apprehended and your vehicle impounded.

Here’s a quick guide for you to know what kind of motorcycles or trikes you can drive given your License Code.

Driver’s License Code A: Motorcycles

Motorcycles are registered with their own specific classifications that all start with “L”. If your License has DL Code A, you are allowed to drive the following “L” classification motorcycles:

  • L1 – two-wheeled, maximum speed not exceeding 50 km/h
  • L2 – three-wheeled, maximum speed not exceeding 50 km/h
  • L3 – two-wheeled, maximum speed can exceed 50 km/h

Driver’s License Code A1: Tricycles

  • L4 – 2-wheeled motorcycle with sidecar, maximum speed can exceed 50 km/h
  • L5 – 3-wheeled, symmetrically arranged tires, maximum speed can exceed 50 km/h
  • L6 – 4-wheeled, weight not exceeding 350 kg, maximum speed not exceeding 45 km/h
  • L7 – 4-wheeled, weight not exceeding 550 kg, maximum speed not exceeding 45 km/h

The information you see above was released by the Land Transportation Office earlier today, and as of the time of this article’s posting, this information can be considered accurate. It always pays to be familiar with and properly knowledgeable of what you can legally drive, so do feel free to share this with everyone whom you know who has either an A or A1 DL Code on their license.

Armed with this knowledge, you know you’re safe from being apprehended by law enforcers such as the MMDA for illegally driving a motorcycle or tricycle on the road.
