2025 Tokyo Auto Salon: Nissan turns the R32 GT-R into an EV

There’s no questioning the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R’s popularity, especially with the tuner scene. You’ve probably seen 1000 horsepower builds, time attack monsters, and a lot more given how capable the RB26 motor and ATTESA all-wheel drive system is. More recently, it’s now highly sought after as a collector’s piece for those that love 90’s JDM nostalgia.

But it seems Nissan thinks they can improve the R32 GT-R even further not by tuning the engine and improving performance, but by transforming it into an EV. Yes, you read that right; Nissan turned this pristine Gun Metal Gray R32 GT-R into an EV.

I know you’re wondering why, and as a GT-R fan myself, I am too. But according to Nissan, converting the R32 GT-R into an EV “safeguards its legacy for the future whether it’s 30, 100 or even beyond”. Essentially, Nissan wants people to be able to enjoy the R32 GT-R in the prospect that everyone has already shifted to electric vehicles.

Before I end up ranting about my thoughts on this car, let’s talk about the specs of the R32 EV. Gone is the RB26 that produced 280 horsepower from the factory. In its place are two electric motors (front and rear) that produce 160kW and 340Nm of torque each, meaning the car is still AWD. Other upgrades include new 18-inch wheels that resemble the original 16-inch units as before, R35 GT-R brakes, Ohlins suspension, Recaro seats, and paddle shifters.

Interestingly, the rest of the interior remains unchanged. Nissan even left the factory stereo untouched. The rear seats have been ditched in order to fit the battery, meaning this R32 is now strictly a two seater model. The downside is that the car is now a lot heavier, weighing in at almost 1800kg.

R32 Ev 2

In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with the R32 EV except for the fact that it’s not something I’d consider a GT-R anymore. Sure, the chassis might say BNR32, but it won’t handle the same way with the added weight nor will it sound like one. I’m sure some of you might disagree with me, but one thing is for sure – this car will get people talking.

But what do you think about the R32 EV? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
