Audi is revising its model naming system to create a standardized, alphanumeric format that indicates a vehicle’s size and positioning, regardless of its powertrain. The move eliminates the previous distinction between electric and combustion-engine models based on numbering.
Marco Schubert, Audi’s Board Member for Sales and Marketing, stated that the change aligns with customer and dealer feedback. “Our nomenclature now provides all customers worldwide with an intuitive orientation in our portfolio,” Schubert said. “We choose the names of our models in a way that reveals size and positioning at first glance.”
The revised system will maintain the use of ‘A’ for low-floor vehicles and ‘Q’ for high-floor models. Numbers from one to eight indicate a model’s hierarchy independent of drivetrain technology. Instead of numbering differentiations, variants will be identified by body styles ( Avant, Sedan, Sportback) and powertrain codes ( e-TRON, TFSI e, TFSI, or TDI).
The new Audi A6, which will debut globally on March 4, will be the first model to adopt the updated nomenclature. The A6 Avant TFSI, for example, will be distinct from the all-electric A6 Avant e-tron. Existing models will retain their current names.
In fact, the Audi Q8 e-TRON Quattro now uses the “Q8” moniker instead of its former name of e-TRON Quattro. You can watch our experience driving from Metro Manila to Baguio and back to Metro Manila on a single charge below.
