The BMW M5 is considered one of the legends of the automotive world, this nameplate has almost single-handedly brought sports sedans to the world.
Every new generation is waited for with bated breath, and the latest one is somewhat groundbreaking.
2025 BMW M5
One of the biggest changes comes under the hood, as the 2025 M5 now comes standard as a plug-in hybrid. It is still powered by a relatively powerful 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 that is helped along by a single electric motor that’s housed with the 8-speed transmission. The total power figures are a massive 717 hp and 1,000 NM of torque, the torque alone is insane enough.
There is only one downside to this electrification, as this 2025 M5 is now the heaviest ever in the historic M5 lineage. The massive performance is limited to just 155 mph but can be bumped up to 190 mph if one were to purchase the M driver’s package. There are 3 drive modes for the M5 Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus which all vary the vehicle usage of the powertrain depending on how the driver wants to utilize the vehicle.
What is interesting are the optional drive modes that can be had, namely the dynamic and dynamic plus, these are modes that are needed to optimize the BMW M5 for the full track experience. In these modes, the driver can switch the xdrive all-wheel-drive system to just rear-wheel drive and other performance-optimizing aspects.
All of these performance upgrades are helped along by updated and beefed-up underpinnings to make sure the M5 is still capable of handling like a true M5 should. One issue though seems to be the weight, the M5 tops out at a hefty 5,390 pounds which seems to be the antithesis of what the M5 stands for, but knowing BMW they wouldn’t launch something with the M5 badge if they weren’t proud of it.
