Marikina doesn’t want to be left behind on the Car-Free Sunday policy; and they won’t be, actually. That’s because this coming Sunday, March 2, 2025, Gil Fernando Avenue in Marikina will become off-limits to cars every Sunday for 4 hours in the morning. What time, you ask? that will be from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. During this gap, it’s all foot-traffic galore along the busy street, now, for all Sundays to come. Rerouting? Here’s what you need to know.

Much like all the other cities that have declared and observed Car-Free Sundays along certain streets, Marikina will limit theirs to one and that will be along the stretch of Gil Fernando Avenue. From 6-10:00 AM, the stretch from Guerilla St. (Xeland Marikina) to Comedor Restaurant will be closed off to vehicles, thus ensuring that the area will be foot-traffic and fully pedestrian friendly.

As added information, streets intersecting and heading towards Gil Fernando Avenue will also be closed during the implementation of Car-Free Sunday, and those include:
- Aquilina Street corner Gil Fernando
- Aquilina Street corner 5th Street
- E. Mendoza Street corner Gil Fernando on BOTH sides
For those whose vehicles might need parking spaces, there are slots and spaces found Aquilina St., Buenviaje St., E. Mendoza, and 7th and 6th streets. You may refer to the image above for the specific areas along the aforementioned streets.

The goal of implementing and enforcing Car-Free Sunday, regardless of what City it is, is to simply make for an area that is perfectly safe for foot traffic and pedestrians, all while trying to cut down on the pollution that vehicles bring to the environment. While there are simply other roads that motor vehicles can take, let’s not forget that the “addition” of car-free streets and areas should encourage those who would want to take a peaceful walk and stroll should avoid bringing their vehicles there. That does make sense, right?
Kudos to the City of Marikina! Every little bit helps, and Mother Nature should be quite happy about this!
