As we bid sayonara to the current-generation Supra, Toyota saw fit to send it off with the special A90 Final Edition. The production of the A90 generation is set to see its last sunset, but with the Final Edition, the auto brand wants to ensure its lasting legacy all while assuring the Supra-owning public that this is their “thank you” for the fans’ patronage of the hallowed badge. So what makes the Final Edition so special?
With only 300 units, A90 Final Edition is this Supra generation’s swan song
From aesthetics to suspension and its powertrain, the A90 Final Edition gets a slew of go-fast-goodies from Toyota; a fitting send-off for the A90 Supra, of course.
Its aerodynamic performance, further improved by Toyota GAZOO Racing Europe, is owed to a carbon-fiber front spoiler, front canards, and front center flap team up with a carbon-fiber swan-neck rear wing. All these pieces optimize the front and rear aerodynamic balance, downforce, and drag, improving road contact and the handling performance of the Final Edition. And just for good measure, a carbon-fiber hood duct features a removable inner duct for improved cooling performance when removed.
Stopping power is provided by 19-inch Brembo brakes paired with drilled floating discs in both the front and rear. To reduce pressure transmission loss due to hose expansion during braking, stainless steel mesh brake hoses are used in the A90 Final Edition. It also features staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear lightweight alloy wheels – engraved with the TGR logo – shod in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 high-grip tires are 10% wider than those on the “conventional” Supra models.
As for the A90 Final Edition’s suspension, Toyota GAZOO Racing slapped on adjustable KW dampers, front and rear stabilizers, strengthened rubber bushings for the front lower arms, pillow ball joints on the front control arms, and the same rigid aluminum mount for the rear subframe found on the GR Supra GT4, a strengthened front-cowl brace and added front-underfloor brace combine with a strengthened rear-underfloor brace structure and a strengthened interior luggage crossbar to increase body rigidity, optimized electric power steering (EPS), and front and rear wheel camber settings.
The list of the A90 Final Edition’s interior updates and additions may not be as expansive as its exterior’s or suspension’s but it is no less impressive.
Its cabin features Recaro Podium CF carbon-fiber full-bucket seats upholstered with Alcantara. As with high-performance Recaros, its bolsters firmly hold one’s body to support precise driving even when subjected to g-forces that, as we know, may very well increase due to the improved driving performance of the A90 Final Edition. The driver’s seat has been finished in red, in contrast to the passenger’s which is black, to accentuate the driver-oriented design of the cockpit.
In keeping up with the Alcantara fabric, the steering wheel, door trim, center console kneepad, center armrest, shift knob boot, and the center portion of the instrument panel are also finished in the same material. Red seatbelts and exclusive carbon-fiber scuff plates round up the interior enhancements of the Final Edition.
But the biggest highlight, is, of course, the power plant of the A90 Final Edition. The B58 engine of the Final Edition, with a revised air path intake, a low-back-pressure catalyst, a new baffled oil pan, as well as improved cooling by way of a stronger radiator cooling fan, the addition of a sub-radiator, and enlarging the differential gear cover cooling fins, puts out a most impressive 435 HP (from 387) and 570 Nm of pull (from 500 Nm). Now if those don’t pin you to your seat with a whole lot of smiles per hour, we don’t know what will.
With the Akrapovič titanium muffler of the A90 Final Edition, we’re pretty sure keeping a goofy grin off your face will be quite difficult to do, too.
Though the production of the current Supra is scheduled to end with the Supra A90 Final Edition as its culmination, Toyota GAZOO Racing will continue to hone and further improve the Supra through motorsports activities going forward. That’s good news to owners of the Supra, of course, since the chances of their units being able to perform better and stronger is something that Toyota seems to be ready to support.
Now, we don’t know if we will get the A90 Final Edition here in the Philippines, but as we always say, miracles do happen. Manufacturers do listen to their local clientele, and if there’s enough clamor, who knows? Maybe the Final Edition may see the light of the day on PH shores.
