Shocking or not? LTO nabs grand total of 10,461 unregistered vehicles in just 1 month!

The LTO’s No Registration (or No Plate) No Travel Policy extends to more than tricycles in Quezon City, as its most recent focus of enforcement. Operations that apprehend motorists with unregistered vehicles have been ongoing for much longer. With last month’s total, we can’t help but be alarmed and, at the same time, feel a little bit “hopeless” that this will be a problem that will be hard to solve. In June alone, 10,461 unregistered vehicles were nabbed.

As a preamble, the two policies (No Plate VS No Registration) are quite different, but having neither is grounds for any motor vehicle to be deemed road-illegal. This article – and the indicated tally of apprehensions – deals mainly with unregistered vehicles.

In a statement released by the LTO, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said that “most of those apprehended were motorcycles with 6,824, followed by tricycles with 1,787, private vans with 954, private sedans with 451, and trucks with 230”.

More specifically, that marks 10,461 in total.

“Patunay lang ito na hindi titigil ang inyong LTO hangga’t hindi narerehistro ang lahat ng sasakyan dahil ito ay hindi lang obligasyon sa gobyerno bilang kapalit ng pagmamay-ari ng sasakyan kundi para sa kaligtasan ng lahat dahil ang kasama sa pagpaparehistro ang pag-inspect roadworthiness [This is proof that the LTO won’t stop until all vehicles are registered. It’s not just an obligation, but for the safety of all (sic)],” said Mendoza.

“Ito ay alinsunod sa patuloy na pagsusulong ng ating DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista na maging ligtas ang lahat ng road user sa ating bansa [This follows the push of DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista for the safety of all road users in the country],” he added.

Of the grand total, the LTO issued traffic violation tickets to 9,212 while 1,601 motor vehicles were impounded.

“Your LTO commits to the Filipino people that we will be aggressive in the campaign against colorum vehicles and unregistered motor vehicles because this is part of our mandate, which is to ensure that all road users are safe,” Mendoza also reiterated.

Given this number, are you surprised? Is it to be expected? What would you do to ensure proper registration for all motor vehicles in the name of order and safety of Philippine roads and road users?
