Mercedes-AMG is developing its first in-house performance SUV

Mercedes-AMG is breaking new ground by developing its first entirely in-house SUV. The new off-roader will be built on the company’s proprietary AMG.EA electric platform and will begin winter testing soon, marking a significant step for the performance division.

High-performance SUVs have been a staple in AMG’s lineup. The company first entered the SUV market over 25 years ago with the ML 55 AMG, quickly establishing itself in the high-performance off-road segment. Today, Mercedes-AMG offers six SUV model lines, including the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV, alongside its flagship off-roader, the Mercedes-AMG G 63. However, this announcement marks the first time AMG will develop its own performance SUV in-house.

The new electric SUV, labeled as “Born in Affalterbach,” is AMG’s second vehicle on the all-electric AMG.EA platform and the sixth model fully developed by AMG. Previous in-house creations include the GT, SL, and SLS models.

“SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform,” said Michael Schiebe, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG. The new model is designed to first emphasize AMG’s performance values, with electric vehicle attributes following, staying true to AMG’s slogan, “AMG First, EV Second.”

The upcoming SUV marks a significant addition to Mercedes-AMG’s lineup, blending electric power with AMG’s core performance and design values.
