MMDA: Buses, trucks prohibited from EDSA-Q.Av Flyover U-turn slot until August 4, traffic sure to be affected

The MMDA has just released a public service announcement. As of last Saturday, June 22, the U-turn slot underneath the EDSA-Quezon Avenue flyover – both in the north- and southbound directions – was closed to buses and trucks, and will continue to be closed until August 4, 2024. This is to make way for rehab and strengthening works for the busy flyover.

MMDA announcement shows rerouting, roads that may be affected by bus and truck volume

Specifically, the works that need to be done involve the retrofitting and strengthening of permanent bridges, as is part of the DPWH‘s ongoing projects to improve roadway infrastructures. That said, the required scaffolding underneath the EDSA-Quezon Avenue flyover will limit vertical clearance to only 2.5 meters, hence, the prohibition of buses and trucks to use the U-turn slot.

As can be seen in the MMDA‘s provided image above, there will be a rerouting scheme in effect for these large vehicles. It’s worth noting that the roads and streets shown above (and below) will receive an influx of both buses and trucks, so traffic can be expected to worsen.

Affected buses and trucks are advised to take the following alternate routes:

From EDSA Southbound:

  • Left turn to Quezon Ave.
  • Left at Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago Ave. (formerly Agham Road)
  • Left at North Ave.
  • To Mindanao Ave. or EDSA
  • To destination

  • Take a U-turn infront of Quezon City Academy
  • To destination

Following the advice of the MMDA, Quezon Avenue, Agham Road now known as Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago Avenue, North Avenue, Mindanao Avenue, and the portion of EDSA fronting the Quezon City Academy will inevitably be affected, so do plan your routes accordingly. The U-turn slot closure for trucks and buses will run until August 4, 2024, likely only until its early hours as all the retrofitting works are expected to finish on the same date.
