In a case of Justice via Social Media, an MMDA enforcer was seemingly served. Following what looks like a violation – and a common one at that – that they themselves are trained to keep an eye out for and apprehend on sight, one of the Metro Manila Development Authority’s finest was riding on the opposite end of the stick. What was his violation? What’s so “embarrassing” as we said in the headline that you can read above? Well…

That’s right, folks. As was posted by the MMDA on its own social media page, the agency has announced that the enforcer in question (or in-photo) was already traced and issued a ticket for his violation of the law on having license plates installed on motorcycles. The Authority’s Chairman Atty. Don Artes ensured that the enforcer would be afforded due process.

So what’s in store for our erring enforcer? The post of the MMDA indicated that aside from a preventive suspension, he may also be slapped with an administrative penalty if it is proven that he did, indeed, commit a violation so grave. So that’s all good on the part of the MMDA, right? Yes. Now, please focus on the image you see below.
There you will find a screen grab from a video that social media user Jhay Castro posted in the Metro Manila Development Authority’s post as a public comment. While what we can see already shows something rather obvious – a police motorcycle riding along the sidewalk meant for pedestrians and hitting a security guard’s podium and, if our eyes serve us correctly has no proper license plate – more than these, what mindset do law enforcers have to want to do and perhaps justify doing things such as this (these!).
Oh, and take note, there was another motorcycle with its rider wearing an MTPB vest who rode on the pavement before the Police motorcycle you see in the screenshot. We trust that the MMDA is also on top of these. At least we hope that it is.

MMDA Chairman Don Artes said it himself, that “Bilang tagapagpatupad ng batas trapiko, nararapat lamang sa traffic enforcer na sumunod sa lahat ng batas trapiko at maging halimbawa para sa ibang motorists [As traffic law enforcers, it’s only proper that they follow all traffic laws and be examples to other motorists].”
Cleaning house is something that many government agencies seem to have had a hard time doing, but seeing this – and we mean this in no vindictive manner if we must say so explicitly – can give some light that if the right people are in seats of power, of the will to serve is stronger than that of self-service and politicking, then maybe, just maybe, there is hope yet for our country. Yes, country. It all starts with everyone, from the bottom all the way to the top.
Kudos to you, MMDA. Maybe we can find something about the MTPB and the police officer next, yes?
