MMDA issues important SONA 2024 traffic advisory

It’s time for the SONA 2024, and per usual, traffic is expected to take a pretty horrid turn on the day. That said, the MMDA has issued an advisory on the alternate routes motorists may want to take to avoid the inevitable jam in the Sandiganbayan area along Commonwealth Avenue. Here’s some important information you may want to note for Monday, July 22, 2024.

The President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA 2024) this year will take place on July 22, that is Monday next week. Portions of Commonwealth Avenue towards, after, and in the immediate vicinity of the Sandiganbayan will be closed to vehicular traffic in the interest of the dignitaries’ safety. As of 8:00 AM, the Batasan-IBP Road will already be closed. No specific time was given as to when the areas along Commonwealth itself will be closed, but here are the alternate routes that have been planned out for SONA 2024.

As for vehicles coming from C-5/Katipunan:

FOR LIGHT VEHICLES

  • Light vehicles from C5 Road may turn left at Magiting St., turn right at Maginhawa St., and turn left at Mayaman St. to Kalayaan Avenue to reach their point of destination

FOR TRUCKS

  • All trucks coming from C-5 along Katipunan Avenue should take Luzon Flyover then turn left at Congressional Avenue to reach their point of destination

MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes said 1,329 personnel are tasked to manage both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, assist in emergency response, conduct rounds of road and sidewalk clearing operations, assist in crowd control, and traffic monitoring. Traffic advisory signages will be installed along alternate routes to serve as a guide for motorists. Plastic barriers and traffic cones will also be put up along zipper lanes and affected roads.

For folks who live in or need to pass Commonwealth on the day of SONA 2024, traffic will be really bad. So bring a lot of patience with you, yes? Drive safely out there, and may the odds ever be in your favor.
