Monterey Car Week 2024: The KALMAR 9X9 is the 992 given the 959 treatment

Modern-day coachbuilder KALMAR Automotive has launched the KALMAR 9X9, which they proudly call the “world’s first retro hypercar.” This new vehicle merges innovative performance with classic, iconic styling, reflecting KALMAR’s “Automotive haute couture” philosophy.

KALMAR 9X9

The KALMAR 9X9 is available in three versions: the 9X9, 9X9 Sport, and 9X9 Leichtbau. Each model is unique, with customers involved throughout the entire design process.

The KALMAR 9X9 boasts a 3.8L turbo engine producing 930 horsepower, paired with a double clutch transmission and an advanced all-wheel drive system. This combination, along with adaptive suspension and rear-wheel steering, ensures top-notch performance. The car also features active engine mounts, optimized intake and cooling systems, ceramic bearings, and a lightweight inconel exhaust system. These elements contribute to its impressive 1450 kg downforce and a Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes.

Jan Kalmar describes the 9X9 as a tribute to one of the greatest road-going sports cars, enhanced to the highest degree by modern technology, creating a new class of vehicle: the retro hypercar.

The 9X9’s suspension, designed by Danisi Engineering in Italy, includes a double-wishbone pushrod front-axle system, shock absorbers from Tractive, and superlight magnesium rims with Michelin tires. CarboBrake’s 3D-printed lightweight titanium brake calipers and ceramic brake discs ensure reliable stopping power, complemented by stability management, traction control, and ABS.

The 9X9’s carbon fiber body, weighing less than 100 kg, was extensively tested for drag and downforce optimization. The minimalist interior includes an analog rev counter and LCD screens, with Bluetooth capabilities for discreet connectivity. Each lightweight seat is personalized, and a hidden roll cage adds safety and stiffness.

The three versions of the KALMAR 9X9 offer distinct driving experiences:

KALMAR 9X9

  • The 9X9 model features a powerful, GT-oriented driving experience with over 900 horsepower.
  • The 9X9 Sport version has a 3.0L 650-horsepower turbocharged engine, a 7-speed manual transmission, and a more driver-focused setup.
  • The 9X9 Leichtbau (Lightweight) version, designed for purists, includes a naturally-aspirated 4.0L engine with a six-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, and a weight of only 1250 kg.

Jan Kalmar emphasizes the 9X9’s bespoke nature and commitment to lightweight engineering, stating that the car is ready for sale without the need for further development. KALMAR Automotive’s five-piece crest reflects its Danish Viking spirit, racing pedigree, and commitment to innovation.

James Rossiter, a former professional British racing driver, has joined KALMAR Automotive as the official factory test driver and brand ambassador, bringing extensive motorsport experience to fine-tune the 9X9’s dynamics.
