In collaboration with its long-term partner Michelin, Porsche has developed new ultra-high-performance tires for the Carrera GT, a super sports car produced between 2003 and 2006. This update aims to improve the vehicle’s precision and predictability, enhancing both its performance and safety.
Nearly two decades after the production of the Carrera GT ended, the newly developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires take advantage of modern tire technology. The rubber compound and structure have been optimized for better performance in both wet and dry conditions. Porsche brand ambassador and development driver Jörg Bergmeister tested the new tires and noted that they elevate the car’s capabilities even further.
The Carrera GT was one of the fastest production cars at its debut in 2003, powered by a naturally aspirated V10 engine originally developed for Le Mans racing. The engine produces 612 PS, allowing the car to reach a top speed of 330 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
The original Carrera GT came equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. In 2013, these were replaced with Pilot Super Sport tires, and now the latest update brings the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, marked with Porsche’s exclusive N0 designation.
Bergmeister, who was involved in the tire development, explained that the goal was to enhance driving dynamics and safety on both wet and dry roads. The new tires use bi-compound technology, featuring different rubber compounds for optimal grip in varying conditions. The inner tread is designed for wet grip, while the outer tread focuses on dry grip, incorporating carbon black for improved performance.
Extensive testing, including sessions on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, ensured the tires deliver optimal performance for the Carrera GT. According to Bergmeister, the tires provide better feedback and allow drivers to push the car to its limits with more confidence.
The improved balance not only enhances driving dynamics but also results in faster lap times. Additionally, the new tires significantly reduce the braking distance, with the Carrera GT stopping 2.5 meters shorter from 100 km/h and 12 meters shorter from 200 km/h.
The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres for the Carrera GT were developed in close collaboration between Michelin, Porsche Classic, and the Porsche Development Centre. They are now available for order through Porsche Classic Partners and Porsche Centres.
