20% PUV Student Discount must be honored, reminds DOTr

The DOTr has just sent a reminder that the PUV Student Discount must be honored and given by PUV drivers (and conductors). School’s back in, and with it, a huge number of students taking public transport to get to their classes. Should those driving and operating PUVs fail to honor this mandatory discount, the students may report the erring individuals and have a rightful fine and penalty slapped on them.

Only a school ID is required to be presented to be eligible for the PUV Student Discount

The 20% PUV Student Discount is actually mandated by law as a service to be provided for, well, students. Any violation thereof can and must be reported for the LTFRB to be able to hand out fines and penalties accordingly.

For those who are being reported for the first time, they will have to pay a PHP 5,000 fine. A second violation will carry a PHP 10,000 fine and the PUV unit will be impounded as well. Should there be a third report/offense, that will have with it a PHP 15,000 fine and a cancellation of the PUV’s Franchise.

All that a student needs to be given the PUV Student Discount is his or her school ID. Upon presenting this, they must automatically be given 20% off their fare, no questions asked. And this discount is not only when the school year starts. Whether it’s the weekend, a holiday, summer vacation, or a semestral break, simply being a student makes you eligible for this discount. But again, just make sure you have your school ID with you, alright?

For any complaints, you can file them through an email or message sent to the LTFRB‘s official Facebook page, or you can call their hotline at 1342 to report any violations.
