Today, Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) unveiled its bold vision for a sustainable future at the 2024 Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS), introducing the “Beyond Zero” corporate movement. This initiative underscores Toyota’s global commitment to achieving Carbon Neutrality (CN) while creating a mobility ecosystem that benefits the people and planet.
The automotive leader said “Beyond Zero” signifies Toyota’s integrated approach to sustainability, going beyond simply reducing emissions to actively contribute to society.
In an exclusive media presentation as part of its motor-show extension at the Toyota Manila Bay dealership, TMP highlighted its multi-faceted approach, focusing on its three key pillars of ‘Electrification,’ ‘Diversification,’ and ‘Intelligence.’
Toyota Mobility Approach to Beyond Zero
On ‘Electrification,’ TMP emphasized its multi-pathway approach to mass and accessible vehicle electrification, recognizing that different regions and customers have unique needs. The company presented Toyota’s diverse range and respective uses of electrified vehicles (EVs), including Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), and even Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle (ICEV) that are powered by carbon-neutral fuels and Hydrogen (H2).
TMP provided a glimpse into the potential of H2 technology, displaying the Toyota Corolla Cross H2 Concept, a prototype vehicle powered by a Hydrogen-fueled Internal Combustion Engine. Media participants were given an exclusive ride experience in the Corolla Cross H2 Concept by the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) company from Japan and witnessed a demonstration of H2 gas fueling infrastructure imported from Malaysia.
Among the company’s presenters, TMP Corporate Affairs Group’s first vice president Josephine Villanueva underscored the importance of a comprehensive roadmap for xEV adoption in the Philippines, covering government support and robust charging infrastructure. Villanueva expressed TMP’s support for the government’s Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) and its goal of 50% xEV market penetration by 2040.
On ‘Diversification,’ Toyota’s commitment extends to exploring various energy resources that would complement the powertrain technologies to ensure energy self-reliance and security, particularly in Asia.
Recognizing the diverse mobility needs of the Philippines, TMP highlighted the importance of providing a variety of mobility solutions. This includes not only offering a diverse product line-up but also exploring new and innovative mobility services tailored to specific communities and environments.
TMP presented the role of its forthcoming local model, the Next Generation Tamaraw – a versatile and adaptable vehicle designed to meet the unique needs of Filipino customers, while also promoting sustainable manufacturing and compatibility with future “carbon-smart” applications.
In a conceptual presentation on ‘Intelligence,’ the company highlighted its commitment to leveraging data and connected technologies to create a smarter and more sustainable mobility ecosystem.
As one of the resource panelists, Toyota Mobility Solutions Philippines, Inc. (TMSPH) president Ma. Cristina Fe Arevalo cited the TMSPH’s existing efforts in vehicle optimization and future carbon emission data analytics, enabling efficient movement of people and goods while minimizing environmental impact. This data-driven approach aims to help raise awareness of carbon footprints and effect travel efficiency in applicable sectors including logistics, services, and public transportation.
Life Cycle Action
Iterating its unique approach to Beyond Zero, TMP said its commitment to sustainability extends to the entire vehicle lifecycle. The company cited its Life Cycle Action initiatives, including its target of achieving carbon neutrality in its manufacturing plant by 2035 through renewable energy use, energy efficiency, and future carbon offsetting. TMP works with its suppliers, dealers, and logistics networks to reduce their environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. Moreover, TMP engages in End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) management by promoting responsible vehicle dismantling and battery recycling systems to minimize waste and maximize resource recovery.
In a message to an audience of Philippine media members, TMP president Masando Hashimoto emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and customers, to achieve Toyota’s Beyond Zero vision. The company called for collective action to create a more sustainable and prosperous future for the Philippines.
