Toyota showcases 4Runner TRD Surf Concept at SEMA 2024

At the 2024 SEMA Show, Toyota debuted its 4Runner TRD Surf Concept, a vehicle inspired by Southern California’s surf culture and the rugged spirit of the original 1980s 4Runner. Built by Toyota’s Motorsports Garage, this concept combines the nostalgic feel of the first-generation 4Runner with the latest design and technology of the 2025 4Runner, creating a modern tribute to beachside adventure.

The concept’s vision, led by Marty Schwerter, Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center, was shaped by his own experiences on the Pacific Coast Highway in a Toyota pickup. Schwerter said he wanted to capture the essence of those iconic, sun-soaked days on the California coast with the new 4Runner’s look. “The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4-cylinder engine,” Schwerter said. “We wanted to create something that resonates today while paying homage to the past.”

Built on the 2025 4Runner TRD Limited, the concept includes a 2.4L turbocharged engine producing 278 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. It features a full-time four-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case and a custom exhaust system for a deeper exhaust note.

The transformation required innovative modifications to create a “factory” 4Runner that performs well with or without a top. Engineers designed a removable top, transitioned from a 4-door to a 2-door, reconfigured the front passenger seat for better access to the rear, and increased the vehicle’s width. Schwerter noted, “What makes this build stellar is how all the changes come together—the result is truly greater than the sum of the parts.”

The team employed CAD and 3D printing to custom-fabricate the removable top, achieving a fit that mirrored the body’s lines precisely. Built to be easily removed by one person, this feature maintains the 4Runner’s open-air legacy.

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept also features a long-travel suspension system with billet aluminum A-arms, custom steering, front axles, and rear-end housing from the Toyota Tundra, all designed for a smooth ride over tough terrain. It sits on 37-inch tires and custom wheels, enhancing its beach-ready look.
