Mazda has officially unveiled the highly anticipated Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, following more than a year of concept teasers. Fans of the concept will be pleased to learn that the production version stays remarkably true to the original design.
At the event, Mazda introduced two distinct variants of the iconic MX-5, the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R and the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster. Both models incorporate motorsports technology developed by Mazda Spirit Racing during their participation in Japan’s Super Taikyu Series.
The headline-grabbing variant is the 12R, limited to just 200 units, all exclusively available in Japan. Priced at approximately 7 million Yen, the 12R offers significant performance enhancements over the standard model. The 2.0-liter engine now produces 200 horsepower, about 20 hp more than the regular Miata. Complementing the power boost are upgraded Bilstein suspension, Advan Neova tires, and a Brembo Big Brake kit, ensuring exceptional handling and stopping power.
Inside, the 12R is outfitted with Recaro racing seats and bespoke Mazda Spirit Racing interior trim, delivering a race-ready feel for enthusiasts looking to take their driving experience to the next level.
For those seeking a more accessible option, the standard Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster retains the familiar 2.0-liter engine, producing 181 horsepower. However, it still receives notable upgrades, including enhanced brakes, suspension tuning, and Advan Neova performance tires. While it doesn’t feature the same hardcore Recaro racing seats as the 12R, it has upgraded Recaro bucket seats that maintain a sporty character.
Mazda also committed to offering Mazda Spirit Racing parts for current Miata owners with the Brembo brakes, Fujitsubo exhaust, and possibly the Recaro seats. However, it is still under market study.
With its race-bred upgrades and striking design, the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster lineup aims to offer enthusiasts an exhilarating driving experience while staying true to the lightweight, agile spirit of the MX-5. Fans can expect both models to be in high demand, with the 12R likely to become a coveted collector’s item.
Mazda’s unveiling at the Tokyo Auto Salon underscores the brand’s commitment to motorsports heritage and performance-driven innovation. Fans and potential buyers eagerly await further details on availability and future plans for the iconic roadster. This is Mazdaspeed reborn. The only question now is, when will the Mazda Spirit Racing 3 hot hatch arrive.
