The LTO announced before the end of last month that brand-new motorcycles with displacements of 200cc and below will get an initial registration that will be valid for three years 50. Those in the market will be rather pleased to know that it’s been made official, and the agency has begun implementing the new policy for newly-purchased motorcycles.
All new motorcycles get 3-year registration validity, now registered in LTO LTMS
Previously, only brand-new motorcycles that were 201cc and above were given an initial registration that was valid for three years. After the issuance of Memorandum Circular No. JMT-2023-2395, this was to be changed. The Memorandum Circular reads “It is hereby directed that initial registration of brand new motorcycles with engine displacement of 200cc and below shall be valid for three (3) years. … It is understood that the MVUC to be collected during the initial registration shall likewise be adjusted to cover the corresponding registration validity period.”
That said, all newly-purchased motorcycles are already registered in the LTO’s Land Transportation Management System. “Using the LTMS for the registration of these brand new motorcycles demonstrates how both the agency and the public benefit from the digitalization of LTO’s frontline services. We must maintain this momentum and expand it to make services for the public easier, simpler, and more convenient,” said Agency Chief Jay Art Tugade.
Again, we would like to reiterate that the 3-year validity is only for the motorcycle’s initial registration. After three years, all motorcycles will have to be renewed yearly, as is the common practice. Whether the Land Transportation Office comes up with a different plan that will extend yearly registrations for a longer time and validity is unknown, but who knows, maybe that’s already being thought of.
