Hyundai unveils INSTER EV: An all-electric subcompact SUV

Hyundai Motor Company introduced the all-electric INSTER, a new A-segment sub-compact EV, at the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show. The INSTER stands out with its unique design, leading driving range, versatility, and advanced technology.

The INSTER features a bold, futuristic design and a spacious interior within a compact SUV body. It offers a segment-leading all-electric range (AER) of up to 355 km, combined with fast charging capabilities. The vehicle’s eco-friendly design includes recycled materials, reinforcing Hyundai’s commitment to sustainability.

Building on the design legacy of the petrol-powered CASPER, the INSTER has an extended body and wheelbase for increased interior space. Positioned between traditional A-segment sub-compacts and larger B-segment models, it offers enhanced practicality and ease of use, making it ideal for city driving.

Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of the Hyundai Design Center stated, “With INSTER, we’ve taken the small SUV image to a bold new place for the global audience. INSTER punches well above its weight with distinctive design and an interior that maximizes its potential in exciting, customer-centric ways.”

Inside, the INSTER features a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation, and a wireless charging dock. The interior design includes customizable elements, providing owners with various personalization options.

To maximize space, the vehicle offers walk-through access from the front row, fold-flat seats, and a flexible seating arrangement. The interior trim choices include Black, Khaki Brown, and Newtro Beige two-tone with full cloth trim.

The INSTER comes with a standard 42 kWh battery and an optional 49 kWh long-range battery. The base variant delivers 71.1 kW (96 hp), and the long-range model delivers 84.5 kW (113 hp), both offering 147 Nm of torque. The vehicle’s DC charging speed and maximum AER enable quick charging and extended travel.

When using a 120 kW DC High-Power charging station, the INSTER can charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes. It also includes an 11 kW on-board charger, a battery heating system, and a high-efficiency heat pump.

The INSTER is equipped with advanced safety and driver assistance features, including a Surround View Monitor (SVM), Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist Rear (PCA-R), Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 1.5 (FCA 1.5). Additional features include Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop and Go, and Highway Driving Assist 1.5 (HDA 1.5).

The INSTER will launch first in Korea this summer, followed by releases in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. Most features will come standard, with optional enhancements available. An additional variant, the INSTER CROSS, featuring a more rugged, outdoor-focused design, will be introduced later. This could also be Hyundai Motor Philippines’ chance of offering an affordable EV for the masses.
