There was a time when a lot of units of the Hyundai Elantra plied our roads. Recent years have seen that dwindle, whether it be because of pricing or the fact that the model is already (very) dated with no new release in sight. That might change, though, because the badge’s 2023 model has been revealed in its home market of Korea, and it is an absolute looker.
2023 Hyundai Elantra, AKA the Avante, finally breaks cover
Compared to what have (had) in the Philippines, the Elantra is a far cry from what it was. Sharp angles, slimmer headlights, a wide geometric grill, and sleek lines are all part of the package now. Looking at the side, you’ll see that the panels are angulated and very reminiscent of the rest of Hyundai’s vehicles, particularly the Tucson.
The rear has a totally new look as well, adopting a wedge form. A full-width taillight and lightbar design dominates from the rear fender through the trunk, and the bumper together with its two-tone color and sporty diffuser gives it a more aggressive look overall. Rounding up the exterior are two-tone alloy wheels.
On the inside, the Hyundai design language is greatly carried into the Elantra. From the materials, and the ergonomics, to the overall look including the rather unique centerpiece of the steering wheel, it’s still all there. The digital gauge cluster is again similar to that of the local Tucson (and Staria), and a very sizeable infotainment screen takes the front and center of the stack.
There will be three variants of the Elantra available, and each will have certain features that are present or lacking, depending on the variant you might choose.
Under the hood, there is an option for a 1.6-liter LPi or Smartstream gasoline engine. The former is good for 118 HP and 152 Nm of torque, while the latter mill puts out 121 HP and 154 Nm of pull. The third variant is a hybrid, also a 1.6-liter engine that puts out 104 HP and 147 Nm.
We’ve said a number of times that Hyundai Motor Philippines has maintained a strong push for the brand’s “resurgence” in the country, and so far they’ve been doing a pretty good job. Their offerings are good, albeit limited in vehicle segments, and with the launch of the Elantra and news of the new Accent making the rounds, perhaps these models can give them a renewed foothold in the sedan segment.
We do hope we get more news from them sooner than later, and before a late strike may render the iron cold.
