Future-proofing Zuffenhausen: Porsche upgrades production facility for the future

This evolution focuses on producing the next 718 generation of electric sports cars, which will now share the assembly line with the traditional two-door Porsche sports cars equipped with boxer engines. The financial commitment to this ambitious endeavor is substantial, with Porsche investing approximately 250 million euros in the construction work. Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche AG, emphasized the significance of this initiative in the context of two major milestones – 60 years of the Porsche 911 and 75 years of Porsche sports cars. For Porsche, this marks not just an investment in infrastructure but a crucial milestone for the Zuffenhausen site, propelling it into a new era of sports car production characterized by enhanced efficiency, elevated quality standards, and the integration of both combustion-engine and electric sports cars on the same assembly line.
The comprehensive reconstruction measures extend beyond a mere facelift. Numerous sports car production systems are slated for upgrades to align with the latest developments in the production process. Incorporating automated guided vehicles (AGVs), a technology previously deployed for producing the electric Porsche Taycan, is a notable feature. These AGVs, part of the “Flexiline” system, will replace the traditional assembly line, introducing a more flexible production process. This adaptability is crucial as Porsche envisions a future where vehicles with combustion engines and electric powertrains coexist seamlessly on a single production line.
Porsche is extending the production line area for two-door sports cars at the main plant in pursuit of increased capacity and flexibility. The use of AGVs for this expanded area will further enhance variability in the production process. The agility provided by AGVs is a strategic move, anticipating the future need for mixed production and the dynamic requirements associated with electric and combustion-engine vehicles.
Quality management in sports car assembly is also undergoing refinement, with new assembly processes and quality assurance stations introduced. The logistics infrastructure within the body shop is experiencing significant expansion. A new building to be completed in 2025 will host high-bay racks extending over two floors to supply the body shop for the Taycan and sports car production. Simultaneously, a new high-bay rack, operational since September 2023, supports the entire assembly plant with various vehicle components. This automated parts warehouse boasts an approximately 35,000 cubic meters storage volume, accommodating over 40,000 storage spaces for pallets and containers.
As Porsche navigates the electrification of its lineup, the Zuffenhausen site, which has been home to a new assembly plant for V8 combustion engines since 2016, is taking on a new role. The assembly of electric motors for the upcoming Porsche Macan is being seamlessly integrated into this engine production center. This strategic move aligns with Porsche’s commitment to electrification. It positions the company to deliver its promise of an electric Macan, slated to roll off the production line at the Leipzig site in 2024.
