Ferrari unveils 296 Speciale and Speciale A– A more track-focused version

Ferrari has revealed the 296 Speciale and Speciale A, high-performance variants of its 296 GTB and GTS plug-in hybrid supercars. These new models bring more power, improved aerodynamics, and reduced weight, building on lessons from Ferrari’s racing programs.

Power for both models rises to 867 horsepower, up from the standard 296’s 818 hp. The bulk of this output comes from a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 delivering 690 hp—matching the 296 Challenge race car. Ferrari says the Speciale uses the same engine mapping and boost strategy, with additional upgrades including titanium connecting rods, lighter pistons, and a revised crankshaft. A knock control system derived from Ferrari’s Formula 1 technology is also included.

The rest of the power comes from an upgraded electric motor that contributes 177 hp. Ferrari’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sends this power to the rear wheels. While the gearbox hardware is unchanged, the shift strategy is recalibrated to handle the increased output better. The hybrid system also enables electric-only driving for up to 15 miles.

Both the hard-top 296 Speciale and the open-top Speciale A feature the same performance figures. Weight savings come in at 132 pounds for the coupe and 110 pounds for the convertible, largely thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber. The interior features lightweight door panels, a bare carbon center console, and more carbon components throughout the cabin and exterior.

Aerodynamically, both cars benefit from redesigned front and rear bumpers and a new retractable rear wing that adjusts based on speed or selected drive mode. The rear diffuser is particularly aggressive. Ferrari claims a 20% increase in downforce compared to the GTB and GTS models.

Additional improvements include better airflow to cool the engine and brakes. On the Speciale A, a new headrest flap reduces cockpit turbulence while improving airflow to the tonneau cover.

Suspension tuning has also been overhauled. The Speciale rides lower, with stiffer titanium springs and adjustable Multimatic dampers borrowed from the 296 GT3 race car. Bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires handle grip. A new five-spoke wheel design completes the package.

The 296 Speciale and Speciale A mark a significant performance leap in Ferrari’s hybrid supercar lineup. They blend track-derived technology with some form of usability thanks to being road-legal.
