Ford has built a one-off 2026 Ford Explorer Platinum hybrid for Pope Leo XIV, marking a project that combined technical work with personal significance for many involved.

Jennifer Barilovich, a lead electrical systems integration engineer, said she initially did not know the identity of the vehicle’s recipient. She later learned the project was for the Pope, whom she described as a personal icon. Barilovich said her family, who are Catholics, reacted with excitement when she shared the news.

The vehicle was presented to the Pope by Ford CEO Jim Farley and his wife, Lia, during a private audience at the Vatican City on Feb. 28. The Pope is expected to use the vehicle within Vatican grounds.

The custom Explorer was assembled at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant, which has been in operation for more than a century. The location has ties to the Pope’s background, as he was raised about five miles away in Dolton, Illinois.

The vehicle features a 3.3-liter V6 hybrid engine paired with a 10-speed hybrid transmission. It also includes a modified antenna compatible with European radio systems. Custom license plates read “DA POPE” and “LEO XIV.”

Interior design elements highlight connections between Chicago and the Vatican, including references to the Chicago flag, the city skyline, and Saint Peter’s Basilica.

Farley said the Pope acknowledged the vehicle’s details and took a short drive, noting that he appeared to enjoy its performance. During the meeting, Farley also shared a photo of the Chicago Assembly team and delivered handwritten letters from employees who worked on the project.
In return, the Pope blessed several rosaries for Ford staff involved in building the vehicle.
Barilovich said the project stands as a major milestone in her career, describing it as the highlight of her professional life so far.
