First introduced in 1999, the IS has been a key model in Lexus’ lineup as a compact FR sports sedan, with more than 1.3 million units sold across 40 countries and regions over 25 years. Development of the latest IS involved testing at the Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama and other locations to further refine the “Lexus Driving Signature.”

The new IS will be offered in two variants, the IS 300h and IS 350. Lexus says the update centers on “refinement in performance and design,” focusing on improving driving engagement and enhancing its sporty look.

In terms of driving performance, the car adopts rack-parallel electric power steering with a variable gear ratio, reducing steering angle in tight corners and intersections. A linear solenoid-type Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) has also been added, balancing stability and ride comfort.

As for the drivetrain, Lexus will retain the current powerplants found in the current Lexus IS.
The exterior features a redesigned front fascia that emphasizes a low center of gravity and wide stance. The F SPORT model includes a new rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics, 19-inch lightweight aluminum wheels, and optional red brake calipers with the Lexus logo. The body color range has been expanded to eight, including a new shade called Neutrino Gray.
Inside, the cockpit has been reworked to highlight functionality. A larger 12.3-inch touchscreen center display and 12.3-inch full LCD digital instrument cluster are now standard. A new “Forged Bamboo” trim has been applied to the console and switch bezel, while a fresh interior color called “Prominence,” inspired by solar flares, adds to the sporty atmosphere.

Safety and driver assistance have also been upgraded. The Lexus Safety System + has expanded functions, while the new Advanced Drive (Lexus Teammate Advanced Drive) provides highway support, including hands-off operation in traffic congestion.

Yasushi Muto, Lexus International Chief Engineer, said the focus was on achieving better “dialogue” between car and driver. He added that the model was developed to further improve ride comfort, control, and cabin experience, while also integrating the latest safety and multimedia technologies.
