The VLE combines limousine-like driving comfort with the interior space and flexibility of an MPV. Designed to carry up to eight passengers, the model also introduces a new digital ecosystem powered by the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The platform integrates infotainment, driver assistance, and vehicle performance systems into a single architecture while enabling over-the-air updates.

According to Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, the VLE represents a major step in the company’s history.

“The all-new electric VLE marks the next significant milestone in our successful 140-year automotive history. Shaped by our pioneering spirit, it redefines the notion of space and comfort and adds a game-changing level of versatility and innovation,” Källenius said. He added that the VLE offers a class-leading range of more than 700 kilometers.

The VLE features a new design made possible by the Van Architecture platform. Its streamlined body achieves a drag coefficient of 0.25, improving aerodynamic efficiency.

The exterior includes a redesigned grille with an optional illuminated frame, a light strip connecting the headlights, and star-shaped daytime running lights with DIGITAL LIGHT technology. Two pronounced power domes on the hood reinforce the vehicle’s front-end design.

At the rear, arc-design taillights integrated into the spoiler lip create a distinctive lighting signature. The roofline stretches smoothly toward a rounded rear section, contributing to the vehicle’s aerodynamic profile.

Inside, the VLE offers seating for five to eight occupants with a highly configurable layout. Customers can choose from newly developed rear seats, including manual Comfort Seats, electrically adjustable Premium Comfort Seats, and the Grand Comfort Seat. The latter adds features such as an additional pillow, lumbar support with massage function, calf support, and wireless charging.

Manually operated seats feature a Roll & Go system that allows them to slide forward or backward, lock into different positions, or be removed entirely. Each seat has integrated wheels, making it easier to move and store outside the vehicle.

Electrically adjustable seats can also be repositioned remotely using the infotainment system or the Mercedes-Benz mobile app. The feature, called Remote Variable Rear Space, allows the interior layout to be adjusted automatically. Preset modes include baggage mode, executive seating with extended legroom, a mixed people-and-cargo layout, and a standard seating configuration.

With three seating rows installed, the VLE provides up to 795 liters of cargo space. Removing the manual seats increases capacity to as much as 4,078 liters.

The interior also features a large Sky View panoramic glass roof extending from the B-pillar to the rear of the vehicle. Ambient lighting surrounds the cabin and highlights the glass roof, while an electric sunblind helps regulate the amount of sunlight.

The VLE features the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), powered by MB.OS is supported by artificial intelligence.

The optional MBUX Superscreen extends across the front dashboard and integrates three displays behind a single glass surface. These include a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central touchscreen, and an optional 14-inch passenger screen for video streaming, gaming, and applications.

Rear passengers can access the MBUX Rear Space Experience, which includes a retractable 31.3-inch panoramic screen with 8K resolution and split-screen functionality. The screen is hidden in the headliner above the front seats and can be deployed for entertainment or work purposes. It also includes an integrated eight-megapixel camera that enables video conferencing.

The infotainment system supports more than 40 apps, including music streaming services, video streaming platforms such as Disney+ and RIDEVU from Sony Pictures Entertainment, and cloud-based video games through Boosteroid.

A Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with 22 speakers and Dolby Atmos technology is also available.

The first version to launch is the VLE 300 electric, producing 203 kW and offering a driving range of more than 700 kilometers under the WLTP cycle. A higher-performance VLE 400 4MATIC electric will follow, producing more than 300 kW and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.

Both versions use a new battery with a usable capacity of 115 kWh and nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry. Mercedes-Benz also plans to introduce additional variants using lithium-iron-phosphate batteries with 80 kWh of capacity.

The VLE uses an 800-volt electrical system that allows high-power DC charging of up to 300 kW. Under optimal conditions, the vehicle can recover up to 355 kilometers of range in about 15 minutes.

Mercedes-Benz says the electric drive system reaches up to 93 percent battery-to-wheel efficiency. All-wheel-drive models include an additional rear electric motor that activates when extra traction or performance is needed.

The VLE uses AIRMATIC air suspension with up to 40 millimeters of adjustable ride height to improve comfort and efficiency. Rear-axle steering with a seven-degree steering angle reduces the turning circle to 10.9 meters, making the large vehicle easier to maneuver in tight areas such as parking garages.

Advanced driver assistance features are grouped under the MB.DRIVE system. Distance Assist DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control comes standard, while optional systems add semi-autonomous steering and automated lane changes. The system relies on a network of sensors that includes 10 cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

The VLE is designed to serve a wide range of roles, from family transport to leisure activities and premium shuttle services. It includes electric sliding doors on both sides, optional hands-free access, and fully retractable windows. The rear window can open separately from the tailgate, making loading easier in tight parking spaces.

The vehicle can also tow up to 2.5 tons, making it capable of hauling caravans, boats, or horse trailers.

According to Thomas Klein, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, the model is designed to combine versatility with comfort.

“The all-new VLE marks the beginning of a new era for Mercedes-Benz. Combining MPV-like versatility with limousine-like driving comfort and an immersive spatial experience, it’s unlike any other vehicle with up to eight seats,” Klein said.

Our Take: The way we see it, the Mercedes-Benz VLE finally addresses the aging and current Mercedes-Benz V-Class and takes on the growing popularity of the luxury MPV segment that Mercedes should have entered long ago.
