MMDA, DILG: Barangay Captains tasked to ensure Mabuhay Lanes are completely obstruction-free

The Mabuhay Lanes are a series of interior roadways that serve as alternate routes for motorists. Unfortunately, the said Lanes are plagued by obstructions from vendor carts to illegally parked vehicles, among others. The MMDA and the DILG have ramped up their road-clearing operations and have vowed to sustain such activities and keep the routes open to free-flowing traffic.

In a statement posted on its official social media page, the MMDA and DILG have “vowed to sustain the clearing and keeping the alternate routes in the metropolis free from obstructions”. Two days ago, the agency said they will deploy three teams to clear the Mabuhay Lanes in a send-off led by MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes.

“We shall have no let-up in clearing the Mabuhay Lanes of different kinds of obstructions. That is a proof that the government is serious in making our key routes accessible,” he said.

To ensure continuity and the proper maintenance of the roadways, Felicito Valmocina, DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs, said that their agency has put a monitoring team in place. This team will keep coordinating with the DILG-NCR and stay on top of keeping the Mabuhay Lanes clean and clear.

“We will be employing new approaches to ensure commitment and prioritization of obstruction-free Mabuhay Lanes. It is high time for our LGUs, especially our barangay heads, to act and sustain our clearing efforts,” he said.

For now, there will be regular operations to keep the Mabuhay Lanes clear from any form of obstruction. Once clearing has been accomplished, an eventual turnover to the areas’ Barangay Captains will be done as part of the memorandum of agreement between the MMDA and the DILG. Once this has been done, it will be the Captain’s duty to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the roads.

It’s good to see various government agencies working together for the betterment of the country and its citizens. The question remains, though, as to how some “unruly” Barangay Captains will handle this new task placed on their shoulders. It’s a known fact that a number of Barangay Captains are part of the “legalizing” of sidewalk or roadside parking and vending; how then will they be able to carry out this new and important responsibility?

For now, we’re happy that the incessant clearing operations are already in full swing. That’s one problem solved. As to how to sustain obstruction-free Mabuhay Lanes, we’d love to think that both the MMDA and DILG have also put systems in place to weed out the proverbial rotten apples in the bunch.

Let the clearing of roads and Barangay Halls commence!

Mabuhay Lane Law is not religiously implemented in our Barangay Bagong Lipunan ng Crame. Illegal parking and barriers on streets(road, driveway and sidewalk)continue to exist. My 3 barriers that I put up on our driveway provided by the barangay as replacement to my barriers confiscated in the MMDA-Barangay operation was recovered by our Barangay July 27,2023 but nearby neighbor’s barriers were not confiscated up to now. Barriers in other streets continue to exist.
