Porsche Patents a Tunnel Mode for Exhausts

If there’s one thing performance car owners look forward to, it’s driving through tunnels with the windows down at full revs. This fun (albeit childish) exercise is something car guys have been doing over and over again.

It seems one brand in particular is keen to cash in on the hype: Porsche.

Porsche Tunnel Mode

Carbuzz reports that, on October 23, a patent was filed for a certain type of feature. According to the report, if the vehicle is equipped with this feature, it can detect an upcoming tunnel through the in-car cameras (not GPS). Once you reach the tunnel, the feature will prompt you with 2 “tunnel mode” features, where your windows will be rolled down upon tunnel entry, also the car will engage the active sport exhaust (if your Porsche variant has it), and lastly, it’ll even kick down a gear for the full aural tunnel experience.

The feature isn’t just limited to closed-top cars; there is also an option for the convertible models. In this case, the car will alert you of an approaching tunnel and will ask if you want to stop and lower the roof; furthermore, it can also turn up the air conditioning system so that you don’t freeze up. Lastly, the most surprising inclusion is that it might be offered in the EV models as well; the system will alter the synthetically pumped in noise to make your EV sound more lively.
