We’ve all seen motorized unicycles, right? If you look at the photo above – a screenshot from the MMDA social media page – that’s what we’re talking about. Also, using these motorized means of transportation along EDSA or along any national roads in Metro Manila, be warned: you are not allowed to do so.
MMDA reiterates prohibition of motorized unicycles on busy roads
The photos you see in this post are screen captures from a video posted by the MMDA on its official Facebook page. In the video, we see an individual aboard a motorized unicycle traveling along EDSA. Looking at the Metro Manila Development Authority’s caption for the vide that they shared, they’re making it pretty clear that what this individual did is strictly prohibited.
“Bawal ang paggamit ng unicycle sa Edsa at iba pang mga national roads sa Metro Manila [The use of a unicycle along EDSA and other national roads in Metro Manila is prohibited],” the caption read.
Further, it also said, “Nakikipagsabayan siya sa iba pang mga sasakyan at lumilipat ng lane na delikado para sa kanya at sa iba pang motorista [The unicycle was keeping up with other vehicles and changing lanes that is dangerous for him and other motorists].”
Whether these unicycles are powered by batteries or gas, there are governing rules on motor vehicle registration. However, no rule, law, or regulation currently considers unicycle registration. However, using it with full knowledge that it is a motorized means of transportation means that certain rules also govern being “motorists”.
The MMDA did not mention if the individual caught on video was apprehended or any penalties for doing the same. Let’s just take this as a stern warning that if you’re thinking of using your unicycle along EDSA or other national roads in Metro Manila, don’t.
