Porsche unveils new 911 Carrera and GTS with T-Hybrid technology

Porsche has updated its most iconic model in the lineup by introducing the new 911 Carrera GTS. This model marks a significant milestone as the first street-legal 911 equipped with a super-lightweight performance hybrid system. Alongside the GTS, the new 911 Carrera, featuring a refined 3.0-litre twin-turbo boxer engine, will also be available immediately upon the launch.

All-new T-Hybrid Powertrain

The new 911 Carrera GTS boasts a revolutionary powertrain system that sets it apart from its predecessors. The 3.6-litre boxer engine, combined with the innovative T-Hybrid system, delivers unparalleled driving performance. With fuel consumption figures of 11.0 – 10.5 l/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 251 – 239 g/km, this model achieves an impressive balance between power and efficiency. The GTS accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in a mere 3.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 312 km/h.

The T-Hybrid system features a groundbreaking electric exhaust gas turbocharger. This component includes an integrated electric motor positioned between the compressor and turbine wheel, enabling instantaneous turbocharger speed and immediate boost pressure build-up. Additionally, the electric motor functions as a generator, producing up to 15 hp of electric power from the exhaust gas flow. This wastegate-free electric turbocharger allows for a single turbocharger, enhancing dynamic and responsive power delivery.

Complementing this system is a permanent magnet synchronous motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK). At idle, this motor provides extra drive torque of up to 150 Nm and a power boost of up to 40 kW. Both electric motors are coupled to a lightweight, high-voltage battery, which stores up to 1.9 kWh of energy and operates at 400 V. This setup ensures optimised weight distribution and efficiency.

The heart of the T-Hybrid drive is the newly developed 3.6-litre boxer engine. It features VarioCam camshaft control and valve control with rocker arms, maintaining the ideal fuel-air mixture ratio across the entire map. The enlarged bore of 97 mm and increased stroke of 81 mm contribute to a displacement of 0.6 litres more than its predecessor. This engine alone delivers 478 hp and 570 Nm of torque, with a total system output of 533 hp and 610 Nm. Despite the additional components, the weight increase over its predecessor is a mere 50 kilograms, ensuring agility and performance.

All these performance upgrades, including the additional active aero over the previous model ensure an 8.7 second faster Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record over the previous 911 GTS.

Enhanced 911 Carrera

The new 911 Carrera retains its iconic 3.0-litre twin-turbo boxer engine, now with comprehensive updates. This engine produces 388 hp and 450 Nm of torque, allowing the Carrera Coupé to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, or 3.9 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package. The top speed is 294 km/h. These enhancements result in a 0.1 second improvement in acceleration and a 1 km/h increase in top speed compared to its predecessor.

The Carrera’s engine improvements include the adoption of the intercooler from the Turbo models, positioned directly under the rear lid grille. The turbochargers, previously reserved for the GTS models, now feature in the Carrera, contributing to reduced emissions and increased power.

Modernized Design and Features

Porsche has meticulously updated the exterior design of the 911 to improve aerodynamics and performance. New model-specific bumpers, integrated all-light matrix LED headlights, and adaptive front diffusers optimize airflow and cooling. The 911 Carrera GTS models feature five vertically arranged active cooling air flaps visible from the outside and hidden flaps on each side, complemented by adaptive front diffusers in the underbody. These elements direct airflow as needed, balancing aerodynamics and cooling.

The redesigned rear includes a light strip with an integrated arc and ‘PORSCHE’ logo, giving the 911 a deeper and wider appearance. A redesigned rear grille with five fins per side seamlessly connects to the rear window, forming a graphic unit that merges with the retractable spoiler. The exhaust systems, specific to each model, are elegantly integrated into the diffuser fins. An optional aero kit for the 911 Coupé enhances performance with distinctive SportDesign front bumpers, side sill panels, and a lighter, fixed rear wing, reducing lift and improving grip.

Optimized Suspension and Handling

The suspension of the 911 Carrera GTS has been comprehensively revised to enhance driving dynamics. For the first time, rear-axle steering is standard, increasing stability at high speeds and reducing the turning circle. The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) anti-roll stabilization system is integrated into the high-voltage system of the performance hybrid, utilizing an electro-hydraulic control system for flexibility and precision. The sports suspension with variable damping (PASM) and a lowered ride height by 10 mm ensures the characteristic GTS handling.

Various wheel designs are available, including Exclusive Design wheels with carbon blades that reduce the drag coefficient. The 911 Carrera GTS models come standard with 21-inch wheels and 315/30 ZR 21 tires at the rear, and 20-inch wheels with 245/35 ZR 20 tires at the front. The wider rear tires improve driving dynamics and traction.

Fully Digital Cockpit and Expanded Connectivity

The new 911’s interior combines traditional design elements with modern technology. The cockpit features a fully digital instrument cluster with a 12.6-inch curved display, offering up to seven customizable views, including a Classic display inspired by traditional Porsche dial designs. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system is operated via a high-resolution 10.9-inch central display, providing enhanced customizability of driving modes and driver assistance systems.

The 911 also offers new connectivity features, including a simplified logging-on process to the PCM with a QR code and deeper Apple CarPlay® integration. For the first time, video streaming is available while parked, and native apps such as Spotify® and Apple Music® can be used in the PCM without a connected smartphone.
