Taking a page out of Makati’s book, Manila’s Roxas Boulevard Car-Free Sundays is now official. That’s right, people. All Sundays hereon until June 29, 2024, means that the portion of Roxas Boulevard between Padre Burgos and Quirino Avenue – both north- and southbound directions – will be closed to all motorized vehicles from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM. Is there a rerouting scheme? Yes, there is, and here’s what you need to know.
Roxas Boulevard Car-Free Sunday rerouting scheme
It’s worth noting that for the duration of the Roxas Boulevard Car-Free Sundays, the entire stretch of Roxas Blvd. will not be closed off to traffic. Again, we reiterate that only the portion between Padre Burgos and Pres. Quirino will be affected. That said, it will not be for the whole day, either. Roxas Boulevard Car-Free Sunday will only be from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM every Sunday, so there’s no need to panic.
As for the rerouting scheme, here’s the information that the MMDA and the City Of Manila wants motorists to know:
-All Vehicles Northbound of Roxas Blvd. shall turn right to Quirino Ave. to point of destination.
-All Vehicles Southbound of Roxas Blvd. shall turn left to P. Burgos Ave. to point of destination.
-All Vehicles coming from the three bridges (Jones, Mc Arthur and Quezon) intending to utilize Roxas Blvd shall go straight to Taft –
Ave. to point of destination.
-All Vehicles coming from westbound of P. Burgos Ave. intending to utilize southbound lane of R. Blvd shall make full turn at round
table straight to Ma. Orosa St then turn right to Kalaw Ave. to point of destination.
-All Vehicles coming from westbound of Kalaw Ave. intending to use southbound lane of R. Blvd shall turn left to M H del Pilar St to
point of destination.
-All Vehicles coming from westbound of UN Ave. intending to use southbound lane of R. Blvd shall turn left to MH del Pilar St to
point of destination
-Trailer trucks/heavy vehicles coming from Delpan Bridge shall turn around at Anda Circle to northbound lane of Mel Lopez Blvd. to
C-3 to point of destination
-All vehicles coming from Finance Road to P Burgos Avenue then turn right to Bonifacio Drive to point of destination.
-All vehicles coming from westbound of Quirino Ave. shall turn left to Roxas Blvd southbound to point of destination
Roxas Boulevard Car-Free Sunday follows the issuance and implementation of Manila City Ordinance No. 8724. In seeking to promote health and wellness and to introduce a Pollution-Free Fitness program in the City of Manila through walking, jogging, running, and cycling, the main thoroughfare was deemed most suited for such a purpose.
As it stands, Car-Free Sundays in Makati have extended and have become a staple. If Manila manages to play this right, then perhaps Roxas Boulevard Car-Free Sundays will also become the norm. For now, let’s all enjoy some respite from vehicular noise and pollution.
And oh, for those affected by the rerouting, patience, please? At least for 4 hours on Sundays, yes?
