Chris and Julie Ramsey, a dynamic husband-and-wife duo with a penchant for adventure, have achieved a remarkable feat by successfully completing a groundbreaking all-electric expedition to the South Pole in Antarctica. This extraordinary journey spanned an impressive 30,000 kilometers over the course of 10 months, commencing at the 1823 Magnetic North Pole on the frozen Arctic Sea. The Ramseys embarked on a challenging odyssey that took them through diverse terrains and conditions across North, Central, and South America before venturing into the most isolated continent on Earth, ultimately reaching the hallowed South Pole. Notably, this pioneering expedition marked the first time any car, let alone an electric vehicle (EV), had accomplished such an arduous journey.
The star of this electrifying adventure was the Nissan Ariya, an all-electric expedition vehicle equipped with e-4ORCE all-wheel control. In its factory-standard configuration with no alterations to the powertrain or battery, this vehicle underwent modifications by Arctic Trucks, specialists in polar mobility, to accommodate the challenges posed by the extreme conditions. Notably, the Ariya braved the toughest tests, including traversing long distances and navigating challenging off-road terrains while contending with extreme temperatures and high altitudes. The vehicle’s adaptability was further enhanced by the fitting of 39-inch BF Goodrich tires.
The genesis of this audacious venture can be traced back to 2017 when Chris and Julie, having previously conquered the Mongol Rally in their Nissan LEAF, envisioned the ambitious Pole to Pole expedition. Their earlier experience using an EV in the 10,000-kilometer Mongol Rally underscored the potential of epic adventures in generating interest in electric vehicles and establishing a lasting legacy of charging infrastructure. The couple’s commitment to collaboration and innovation with like-minded partners played a pivotal role in transforming the Pole to Pole dream into a reality.
Reflecting on the accomplishment, Chris expressed disbelief at their arrival at the South Pole, emphasizing the toughness of the journey that exceeded his expectations. He proudly highlighted how Pole to Pole reached millions of people worldwide, inspiring them to embrace electric vehicles in their daily lives. Julie echoed this sentiment, describing the journey as incredible and emphasizing the network of supporters and contributors who joined them on this transformative expedition.
Allyson Witherspoon, Corporate Vice President at Nissan Global Marketing, Brand, and Merchandizing, extended heartfelt congratulations to the Ramseys, commending their daring spirit and passion for pushing the boundaries of electric adventure. She underscored the journey as a testament to Nissan’s innovative technology and its ability to deliver excitement in various settings, from daily commutes to the challenging terrains of the Antarctic.
