BYD Philippines is one of the most aggressive brands locally; they’ve delved deep into taking the Philippine market seriously. Their newest contender is set to enter a very competitive arena: the pickup truck segment. Say hello to the BYD Shark 6 DMO.
BYD Shark 6 DMO
The brand knew that the Shark 6 DMO would be swimming in contested waters and, as such, has decided to take a more lifestyle and modern approach with their philosophy behind the Shark 6.
Starting off with the looks, it very much resembles what a modern definition of rugged is, with the majority of the character lines being boxy and square, coupled with forward-looking touches like bright LED lights upfront and at the rear. It manages to look distinct enough to distinguish it from the competition, in fact a little more imposing that other designs out there in the segment. Proportionally, it is also bigger and longer than most of the competition, measuring in at 5,457 length, 1,971 width, and 1,925 height. It also has a water wading depth of 700mm, which is more than enough, especially for a hybrid pickup.
Inside the Shark utilizes a very rugged design approach, and even the materials used inside feel robust and durable, but of course, it’s still a modern vehicle with the signature BYD 1.8-inch rotating infotainment screen. The most impressive interior features would have to be the space. Since the Shark 6 doesn’t use a propeller shaft like traditional 4×4 vehicles, the floor inside is flat, and they were also able to make the back seats have a 27-degree slant angle instead of being upright for added comfort.
The rear truckbed is also feature-laden; it has 3 power outlet sockets and truckbed lights, while the tailgate has a soft open feature at the convenience of a button press found on the tailgate, inside the truck, and on the infotainment screen.
Capability-wise, the Shark 6 is a revolutionary product compared to the current crop of 4×4/AWD pickups. It doesn’t have mechanically locking differentials instead, the car can electronically and automatically adjust itself using its brain depending on the terrain and conditions, which we were able to test prior to the launch.
The Shark 6 is powered by 2 Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors, one in the front and one in the back, for a combined total of 431 PS and torque figures of Front: 310 Rear: 340. There is also an internal combustion engine used to charge the batteries, which is a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. The full EV range is 100 km, and the combined full range is safely put at 800 km, which, according to the brand, is around 40% on average more distance than the competition with one full tank of fuel and charge.
The BYD Blade Battery technology also allows the Shark 6 to charge from DC: 40 minutes from 30% – 80% /AC: 5.2 hours from 15% – 100%. Of course, the charger is the locally mandated CCS-type 2 charger.
