For the first time, an electric vehicle has made its way all the way to the number one spot on global sales rankings according to global automotive market research company JATO Dynamics.
As reported by Motor1, the Tesla Model Y has now overtaken the ever-popular Toyota Corolla and Toyota Hilux as the best-selling vehicle in the world.
According to JATO Dynamics, the Tesla Model Y sold 267,200 units in the first quarter of 2023 while Toyota held spots two to five with the Corolla, Hilux, RAV4, and Camry respectively.
It’s both quite surprising and unsurprising that it has made its way to the top in global sales. Surprisingly because the Tesla Model Y (USD 47,490) is more than double the price of the Toyota Corolla (USD 21,700), so it’s definitely not an affordable vehicle
But unsurprisingly because Tesla has recently cut the price of most of its models including the Tesla Model Y ranging from USD 3,000 to USD 6,000 price cuts depending on which variant and with the combination of it being electric and an SUV rather popular nowadays.
Toyota seems to still be going strong with the Corolla, RAV4, and Camry all still being popular choices among consumers across the globe and with the Hilux still being well-liked across the Philippines and other regions in Southeast Asia.
