New Commonwealth Zipper Lane Exit opens tomorrow, August 14, 2023

Heads up, QC motorists! The UP Ayala Technohub exit of the Commonwealth Zipper Lane will be closed starting tomorrow. In its place, a new exit will be opened closer to Philcoa, right across Petron and DBP on the QC Circle side of the Avenue. Here’s what you need to know about the new zipper lane scheme.

Those who come from the more northern areas of Quezon City and take the Commonwealth Zipper Lane in the morning will have a new exit to get back into the QC Circle-bound lanes. As you might know, the last exit is located across UP Technohub but starting tomorrow, this exit will be closed and a new one will be opened. It will be located closer to the left-turn area into University Avenue (towards UP) and is across Petron and DBP on the opposite side of Commonwealth.

The infographic you see above shows a clearer picture of where the new exit will be located. You’ll have to expect a bit of a slow-down as you approach the exit, given that vehicles will have to line up, stop, and wait for their turn to be allowed to turn left towards UP. Those who take this route are familiar with this stop-and-go scheme and those who will have to go further ahead may be in for a bit of a bottleneck. We hope the MMDA has considered this and that they are well-prepared to address this potential scenario.

The Commonwealth Zipper Lane has seen its share of new exits and turn schemes since its implementation began. The last bastion of unspoiled open road in Quezon City, Commonwealth Avenue has slowly but surely started being congested in recent years, and the Zipper Lane is but one way that the QC Government and the MMDA think that it can be alleviated.

Leaving early to avoid Commonwealth traffic has become a way of life for those who live in the area, but tomorrow brings a new scheme into play, and we might all have to wake up and leave just a little bit earlier, just in case.

Drive safely out there, everyone!
