Toyota unveils latest Daihatsu derived model; 2024 Yaris Cross for ASEAN

Toyota seems keen on filling all the gaps in the crossover/SUV market by launching the ASEAN version of the Yaris Cross.

The first thing that needs to be mentioned is that the ASEAN Yaris Cross is different from the American/European version. Our region’s Yaris Cross is derived from the Daihatsu x Toyota partnership. It is supposed to slot in between the Raize and Corolla Cross models.

The ASEAN Cross is based on the DNGA platform and it is supposedly considerably longer than the European version and almost as big as the Corolla Cross and Honda HR-V.

Moving on to the important highlights of the Yaris Cross are the powertrain options, first up is the 2NR-VE 1.5-liter that makes 106 hp and 138 Nm of torque. This is then paired with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT. The second option is more compelling, it is a Hybrid system that pairs a 2NR-VEX (91 hp and 121 Nm) with an 80 hp and 141 Nm electric motor. The batteries are compact Lithium-Ions stored in the rear seats.

In terms of style the Yaris Cross-references the design language called “Solid and Dynamic”, overall though it looks like a tamer version of the Rav4 and Veloz the front fascia is very similar to both those vehicles with a aggressive look. The interior meanwhile retains much of the familiar Daihatsu/Toyota vehicle layout, the driver gets a 7-inch digital instrument cluster while the infotainment screen is a 10-inch unit. Other amenities include a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, smartphone connectivity, a powered driver’s seat, a power tailgate, and a wireless charger.

In terms of safety, it comes with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of features. Despite the unveiling of the ASEAN Yaris Cross, no final prices have been given yet, but it is almost certain that the car will be sold very soon. As for the PH market no word yet if it will make it this year, but we would hazard a guess that TMP will be eager to sell it here soon.
