In an electrifying world premiere, Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its PureSpeed concept car, a radical open two-seater, during the Formula 1™ Monaco Grand Prix. Showcased on a floating pontoon in Monaco’s harbor, the Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed captures the essence of motor racing, thrilling the audience and impressing Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
This avant-garde design, devoid of a roof and windscreen, pays homage to the pure spirit of motorsport. It offers a sneak peek into the first model of the exclusive Mercedes-Benz Mythos series, a limited edition of only 250 units aimed at the brand’s most passionate enthusiasts and collectors. You can also think of it as a spiritual successor to the Mercedes McLaren Stirling Moss, which didn’t have a windscreen.
“The Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed offers a glimpse of what is probably the most direct way to experience performance and driving pleasure. Radically open, neither a roof nor the windscreen separates the two passengers from the elements. You can experience light, air, and passion unfiltered with all your senses. As the concept of our first Mythos vehicle, it embodies the highest level of exclusivity. Design elements such as the HALO also create a Formula 1 feeling. There is therefore no better place for its world premiere than Monaco,” stated Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes Maybach divisions.
The PureSpeed’s design is a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s storied racing heritage, blending innovative materials with cutting-edge technology. The concept’s HALO system replaces the conventional A-pillar, echoing its use in Formula 1™ for driver protection. This feature, alongside the specially designed aerodynamically optimized helmets, ensures a unique and safe driving experience, providing an unfiltered connection to the road and the elements.
Design inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar is evident, with sharp carbon fiber accents contrasting the car’s smooth, sensual lines. The vehicle’s aerodynamics are meticulously crafted, featuring closed rear wheel covers for improved airflow and open front wheel covers for optimal brake cooling and downforce. The elongated bonnet, low front end with a pronounced “shark nose,” and a sporty, aerodynamically optimized bonnet accentuate its performance-oriented design.
The Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed also pays tribute to legendary Mercedes models. The twin flying buttresses behind the seats evoke the iconic 300 SLR, celebrated for Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson’s 1955 Mille Miglia victory. The striking paintwork, transitioning from Le Mans red to graphite grey with a black AMG pattern, honors the 1924 Targa Florio-winning Mercedes, highlighting the car’s historic significance.
This concept car is not just about aesthetics; it’s about reliving the glory of Mercedes-Benz’s racing legacy. The number 10 on the front wings commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Targa Florio triumph, where a red Mercedes, disguised to evade local interference, clinched victory.
As a groundbreaking blend of past and future, the Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is set to redefine the limits of performance and exclusivity in the automotive world.
