Hyundai Motor America has revealed the CRATER Concept, a compact off-road SUV, at its global debut during Automobility LA 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Developed at the Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, the concept previews a tougher, more capable direction for future XRT-inspired models, which are design exercises for off-road use.

The CRATER Concept will be displayed throughout Automobility LA 2025 media days and during the Los Angeles Auto Show’s public days until November 30. It is presented alongside Hyundai’s current lineup, including the 2026 Palisade SUV, the IONIQ 5 electric SUV, and the newly introduced IONIQ 6 N high-performance sedan.
The concept is positioned as Hyundai’s design exploration for an adventure-focused compact SUV. SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design, said the project began with the question, “What does freedom look like?” and reflects the brand’s aim to build more expressive, versatile vehicles within the XRT family.

The exterior follows Hyundai’s “Art of Steel” design language, using steel’s natural formability to shape clean volumes and precise lines. The body has been styled to communicate off-road readiness, with chiseled sides, bold skid plates, and a compact monocoque architecture intended for all-terrain travel. Its adventurous proportions are supported by steep approach and departure angles that enhance capability.
The concept rides on 18-inch hexagonal wheels inspired by the idea of an asteroid striking metal, paired with 33-inch off-road tires for improved traction and ground clearance. A wide skid plate protects the underbody and strengthens the visual stance. The roof platform serves as a mounting point for auxiliary lights and storage, while limb risers extending from the hood to the roof provide added protection against branches on narrow trails. A sheer fender design and utility-inspired rocker panels reinforce the concept’s planted, durable appearance. The lighting signature uses three-dimensional parametric pixel elements with indirect illumination, complemented by roof-mounted off-road lamps. Among its hidden features are a recovery hook that doubles as a bottle opener and side-mirror cameras that can be removed and used as flashlights or recording devices.
Finished in Dune Gold Matte paint, the exterior color draws from California’s coastal landscapes and natural tones. Orange accents add contrast and contribute to the vehicle’s youthful, outdoors-focused presentation.
Inside, the CRATER Concept is designed for tech-savvy users who prioritize durability and practicality. The interior theme, called “The Curve of Upholstery,” wraps technical shapes in durable materials. A bent-metal-style crash pad sets the visual tone, with perforations that allow ambient light to glow through. Hyundai adopts a Bring Your Own Device approach for digital controls, providing flexibility for different user preferences. A full-width head-up display spans the cabin and includes a rearview camera mirror feed. A visible roll cage outlines the cabin and incorporates grab handles, emphasizing structure and support.

The seats use wraparound forms with three-dimensional padding, firm bolsters, cylindrical cushions, and a four-point seatbelt layout for added stability during rough driving. The squared-off steering wheel features a center pixel display and quick-access terrain mode buttons. Additional interior details include a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, removable Bluetooth speaker, cylinder-style center controls with linked indicator lights, and a series of small design elements tied to a symbolic character called “CRATER MAN,” used as playful accents throughout the cabin.
The Black Ember interior color palette uses leather, Alcantara, brushed metal, and topographic surface patterns. Materials are chosen for durability and to develop patina over time, reflecting the vehicle’s intended use in rugged environments. Orange interior highlights connect the cabin to the outdoor theme.

For off-road use, the CRATER Concept features a tactile multi-function controller for differential management, traction and braking control, and terrain settings. Snow, Sand, and Mud modes are presented as part of its off-road narrative. Downhill brake control, trailer brake control, a compass, and an altimeter are also included.
The Hyundai CRATER Concept previews what future XRT models could offer in design, capability, and usability. While still a concept, it signals Hyundai’s intention to expand its presence in the off-road and adventure-focused segment.
