Hyundai has revealed the INSTEROID at an exclusive garage party in the Seoungsu district of Seoul, South Korea. (Publicly unveiled at Seoul Mobility Show 2025) It is a radical concept vehicle based on its successful INSTER EV lineup. Developed by Hyundai Motor’s European design team, INSTEROID is not intended for production but serves as a bold design study to redefine the compact electric SUV segment. However, it does look more like a hot hatch than a hot SUV.

INSTEROID builds on the popularity of the INSTER, which launched last year and has already become a top-three finalist for the 2025 World Car of the Year award. The concept positions itself as an “INSTER on steroids,” with added performance and aggressive styling to appeal to younger, tech-savvy drivers.

The design reflects influences from gaming and motorsport culture. The exterior features a widened stance, track-optimized wheels, a wing spoiler, diffuser, and air flaps around the wheel arches for improved aerodynamics. The crisp white body is accented by a bold orange highlight, giving the vehicle a sharp, futuristic appearance. However, no power figures were divulged.

Inside, the cabin is stripped down and driver-focused. It includes bucket seats, a roll cage, and a custom steering wheel designed to create a gaming-style cockpit. All control elements are fully adjustable, and the car features a distinctive sound profile to enhance the driving experience.

INSTEROID also introduces a Drift Mode for spirited driving, and playful features like the Beat House sound system and Message Grid offer interactive personalization. The Boost icon throughout the car symbolizes different user personas, emphasizing emotional connection.

In line with Hyundai’s sustainability goals, the interior uses 3D knit fabric made from recycled yarns, created in a single-piece, tailored process. Lightweight lattice structures are integrated to reduce weight without compromising strength.

Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center, said, “INSTEROID is a beacon of innovation that challenges us to rethink the boundaries of automotive design.”

The unveiling follows Hyundai’s launch of the INSTER Cross in January, which is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts. INSTER models are experiencing strong demand globally, and later this year, Hyundai plans to expand into markets across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and the Americas. This means the INSTER could very well enter the Philippine market, though we wouldn’t mind a production-ready version of the INSTEROID either.
