Pick-up trucks are always a hot segment, and in recent years have become the backbone and sales driving force of some automotive brands. As such brands choose to really pour in a lot of research and development on a new version, just like what Toyota did with the new Tacoma.
2024 Toyota Tacoma
The one thing that is very apparent when you first look at the all-new Tacoma is the extremely tough and rugged-looking exterior. There are no carefully sculpted lines here, just pure boxy angled shapes alluding to Tacoma’s utilitarian and tough nature. The Tacoma has a new TNGA-F platform that uses high-strength steel throughout the chassis to improve rigidity and aluminum on the upper portion of the body to help reduce weight.
The brand is offering engine options for the Tacoma including hybrid and turbo power. First up is the entry point a new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 228 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque when paired with the standard eight-speed automatic transmission. Next is the SR5 which gets a more powerful version of that same turbocharged engine producing 270 hp and 310 lb-ft. Amazingly the SR5 is available with a six-speed manual with auto rev-matching. The top-end engine is the hybrid that features a 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery back and a 48-hp electric motor combined with the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, whipping out a total output of 326 hp and 465 lb-ft.
Inside a new 8.0-inch touchscreen comes standard inside the Tacoma while an optional 14.0-inch display is available on the Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. That larger screen pairs with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster while a smaller 7.0-inch cluster comes standard. Both displays use come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as well as Qi wireless phone charging. Also available is a removable JBL Bluetooth speaker option available with the 10-speaker JBL audio upgrade.
The Tacoma also comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 on all variants of the Tacoma. That includes things like pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and a new Proactive Driving feature.
Proactive Driving combines the new camera and radar technology to create a more advanced form of adaptive cruise control and other safety features. Proactive Driving is a new feature for Toyota and the Tacoma is the first to debut it publicly.
