The Hyundai RN24 is a drifting go-kart

At the annual ‘N Day 2024,’ Hyundai Motor Company’s N division unveiled the RN24, a next-generation high-performance electric vehicle prototype. This latest “Rolling Lab” showcases Hyundai’s commitment to pushing EV technology in performance and motorsport.

N Day highlights Hyundai’s three fundamental principles: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar, which drive the N division’s focus on creating EVs that are as enjoyable to drive as they are practical. “Hyundai N is not just a brand but a representation of our commitment to innovation and high performance,” said Manfred Harrer, Executive Vice President of Hyundai’s Genesis and Performance Development Tech Unit.

The RN24 is built with dual motors from Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N, producing 640 hp, and is installed into a compact EV chassis inspired by the World Rally Championship. The vehicle retains an 84 kWh battery but reduces its wheelbase by 340 mm, achieving a compact design similar to Hyundai’s i20 N Rally1 Hybrid. This setup aims to deliver maximum power in a lightweight package.

The RN24 also incorporates Hyundai’s WRC-style suspension, rally-spec dampers, and high-rigidity subframes. It features an advanced WRC Powertrain Drive Control Logic system, allowing drivers to adjust power, acceleration sensitivity, regenerative braking, and power balance using the steering wheel.

Additional features include an external sound system with N Active Sound+ speakers and a unique rear fender design that enhances the sound experience. The RN24 also introduces Hyundai’s “Rally Mode” torque control, optimizing torque distribution across all four wheels and emulating the mechanical setup of Hyundai’s WRC cars in an electronically streamlined format. The vehicle’s e-Handbrake technology further reduces weight by eliminating the need for hydraulic brakes tested in Hyundai’s WRC Central European Rally.

The RN24 stands out with its exposed roll cage for stability, Elantra N matte black forged wheels, and a Touring Car Racing-inspired spoiler for enhanced aerodynamics. 3D-printed gussets further improve rigidity and reduce weight.

“RN24 exemplifies Hyundai N’s commitment to advancing electric motorsport technology by prioritizing the driving experience,” said Joon Park, Vice President of N Brand Management Group, emphasizing the brand’s ongoing pursuit of innovation in EV performance. Of course chances of the RN24 heading into production is very slim at it is meant to just visualize the future of performance EVs, however, it could make a great case as a modern-day Ariel Nomad or Atom.
