Honda Prelude will make a big comeback after 23 years, BUT…

The Honda Prelude – both the model and nameplate – has been on the shelf for more than 2 decades now. In the years of its existence, it has garnered an impressive following. In the Philippines alone, we do have a few specimens roaming the streets, a “racier” Accord among enthusiasts, if you will. The good news here is that it will finally be going back into production; this much has been confirmed by Honda. The catch: it will be in the European market. For now? Let’s have a look at the information we have.

Honda Prelude fans will be pretty excited about this. Those outside Europe, hold your breath

First shown off to the public at last year’s Japan Mobility Show, the Honda Prelude Concept caused a lot of ruckus among showgoers and fans alike. A public display of a concept does have some chance of it becoming a production model and as we have it, it will be. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year, Honda confirmed (well, will verbally confirm) that it is, indeed, making a comeback. It will begin (and we hope it will not stop) in Europe.

“The new Prelude not only marks the latest chapter in our ever-evolving hybrid story, it is also the product of 25 years of pioneering hybrid research and development. Ensuring this model maintains its ‘sporty’ DNA by perfectly blending the efficiency and environmental advantages of electrified driving with an exhilarating experience behind the wheel – liberating users from their daily lives with increased driving pleasure,” said Tomoyuki Yamagami, Chief Engineer and Large Project Leader, Honda Motor.

“In addition, the Prelude demonstrates the continued importance of hybrid powertrains as part of Honda’s automobile electrification strategy – a key step towards our commitment for 100% of new vehicle sales to be battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell by 2040,” Yamagami added.

All these said it’s a foregone conclusion that the new generation Honda Prelude will be a hybrid. Sporting Honda’s e:HEV powertrains include models such as the Jazz, Civic, HR-V, ZR-V, and CR-V. As we all know, Honda is pushing for zero-carbon emissions and at this point, any new (or revived) models that they’ll release will more likely than not be electrified in some sort.

Rumor has it that the Prelude will be available in the mid-2020s but we’re waiting for confirmation on that. Regardless, if there is a demand – of which there is – Honda may very well reintroduce the Prelude into other markets after its European debut. It’s just a matter of when.
