Mugen gives the 2023 Honda Civic Type R an awesome makeover

Honda has a bunch of cars on display at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon. But one of the main attractions at their booth is this: a Mugen-modified 2023 Honda Civic Type R. Compared to the previous-generation Mugen FK8, Honda‘s in-house tuner has given the FL5 a more “subtle” touch.

Mugen FL5 Honda Civic Type R looks as awesome as they come

Starting with the aesthetic bit, this Type R features a new front and rear bumper, side skirt, hood, and wing. It also rides on BBS wheels paired with larger Brembo calipers and rotors. And before you ask, the rear wing design does appear to be a carry-over from the previous-generation model.

Interestingly, Mugen ditched the triple-rear exhaust setup on the standard Type R. It now uses a single tailpipe that exits through the middle of the bumper. The other small change is the interior with new bucket seats fitted in to keep the driver secure. There’s no word whether any changes under the hood of this model were made or done as of writing. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if they did bump up the power of this concept to match the more aggressive design.

Yes, the badge does say this modified Type R is still a “concept”. Well, we like to believe that’s only for now. Expect Mugen’s production-ready FK8 CTR to look more or less the same as the one here. With that, we suggest FL5 owners have their wallets ready the moment these aftermarket parts become available on the market. There’s no word on pricing just yet but we were told that these will be announced at a later date. More importantly, don’t expect them to be cheap.

They never were.
