Mercedes-Benz looks to be going back to their old design direction with the unveiling of the Vision Iconic, a concept car that marks a new chapter in the brand’s design evolution. The vehicle embodies the company’s goal of merging classic elegance with advanced technology, serving as a bridge between the brand’s storied past and its electric, digital future.

A key feature of the Vision Iconic is the reimagined Mercedes-Benz radiator grille. First seen on the all-new electric GLC, the “iconic grille” blends heritage and innovation through a chromed frame, smoked-glass structure, and integrated contour lighting. The illuminated upright star on the hood adds to its bold, modern identity while honoring over a century of Mercedes-Benz design.

“With innovations such as neuromorphic computing, steer-by-wire, solar paint, and Level 4 automated driving, we are setting new standards for the electric and digital age,” – Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer.

Long time Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener described the concept as “a sculpture in motion” inspired by the 1930s golden era of automotive design. Featuring a long hood, flowing lines, and Art Deco influences, the Vision Iconic pays tribute to models such as the 300 SL while symbolizing the future of Mercedes-Benz aesthetics.

The front end showcases the brand’s new illuminated “digital face,” where lighting plays a key role in design expression. Slim headlights and animated illumination for the star and grille emphasize the connection between light, technology, and emotion. The deep black high-gloss finish highlights the car’s sculptural shape and refined proportions.

Inside, the Vision Iconic presents a lounge-like interior focused on comfort and craftsmanship. The Art Deco-inspired cabin features a continuous velvet bench seat, handcrafted brass accents, and intricate mother-of-pearl marquetry. The highlight is what Mercedes highlights as the “Zeppelin” instrument panel, which is a floating glass structure combining “analog artistry and digital innovation.”

Analog animations inspired by luxury chronographs appear when the vehicle is unlocked, while a pillar-to-pillar screen integrates seamlessly into the design. The steering wheel contains a floating Mercedes-Benz logo inside a glass sphere, reinforcing the blend of modernity and tradition.

Features in the paint job of the Vision Iconic is Mercedes-Benz’s development of solar coating technology that could act as energy-generating surfaces for electric vehicles. Applied across a car’s body, the photovoltaic layer could extend range by up to 12,000 km annually under ideal conditions. The recyclable coating avoids rare earth materials and achieves up to 20 percent energy conversion efficiency.

The Vision Iconic also previews future autonomous capabilities supported by neuromorphic computing, which is a system that mimics the human brain to process data more efficiently. Mercedes-Benz says this could cut energy use in autonomous driving systems by up to 90 percent while improving recognition and reaction times in complex driving conditions.

The car supports Level 2 urban driving capabilities and is designed to accommodate future Level 4 automation. Under this mode, drivers could rest or watch media while the vehicle handles all driving and parking functions.

The Vision Iconic features a steer-by-wire system that replaces the mechanical link between the steering wheel and front wheels with electronic controls. Combined with rear-axle steering, this technology improves maneuverability and allows greater flexibility in interior design.

To accompany the debut, Mercedes-Benz launched the Vision Iconic Capsule Collection — six Art Deco-inspired outfits that reflect the vehicle’s dark blue and silver-gold color palette. The collection debuted at Shanghai Fashion Week, coinciding with the show car’s world premiere.

The brand also released the ICONIC DESIGN Book, a comprehensive look at Mercedes-Benz’s new design philosophy. It features insights from CEO Ola Källenius and Design Chief Gorden Wagener, along with images of future concept models that embody the brand’s “New Iconic Era.”

Through the Vision Iconic, Mercedes-Benz looks to return to their old design direction that has brought them to the forefront of luxury mobility with innovation, craftsmanship, and unmistakable design identity.
