McLaren joined the Hybrid Supercar world with the Artura, and as is the norm with most of the supercars a top-down Spider version follows.

When it comes to making a top-down version of a coupe, it’s not as simple as just cutting the roof off. McLaren went as far as redesigning some aspects to properly fit the new body type without sacrificing performance and rigidity.

Next up is the reworked 3.0-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain with an additional 10 HP, now making 690 HP. The automaker added new engine mounts to lessen the engine movement and improve stability. The 8-speed transmission has also been improved, now providing 25% faster shifts compared to before.

An interesting feature called the Spinning Wheel Pull-away allows for extra dramatic and smoky wheelspin off the line during heavy throttle input. Headline numbers for the Artura Spider are a 0-60 mph time of 3 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph. In full EV mode, the range is around 21 miles.

McLaren also reworked the cooling system of the Artura Spider, by making new brake cooling ducts. Next up is a revised damper valving that improves the ride and handling. Lastly, despite adding a roof retracting mechanism the Spider only weighs 136 pounds more than the coupe, with the retracting roof only taking 11 seconds to open or close.
