We all know that the MMDA’s Single Ticketing System will start implementation on May 2, right? The public is divided between groups for and against, but one common concern is that of extortion, more commonly referred to as “kotong”. The Metro Manila Development Authority means to address this, and they will do it with body cameras worn by enforcers.
100 Enforcers of MMDA will start wearing body-worn cameras, more will soon follow

For now, 100 units of body cameras will be issued to the same number of enforcers on the ground in 4 different areas of Metro Manila. Just days ago, the MMDA Traffic Discipline Office (TDO) has already conducted an orientation for its enforcers. The orientation covered familiarization with the cameras’ technical specifications, its features, as well as it parts that enforcers will use in their traffic management operations.

The agency’s Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes explained that the recordings from the cameras are linked to their new Command Center in Pasig City and are usable as evidence to support any complaints of apprehended motorists. Each camera will have a battery life of 8 hours, equivalent to an entire shift of one enforcer.

As it stands, there are only 100 body cameras in hand; obviously not enough for all the enforcers that will be deployed daily. Artes did say, though, that they do plan to acquire more cameras for more of their personnel to be equipped in the following months, especially since they see these gadgets as important and necessary tools to combat the “kotong cops”.
The Single Ticketing System is only about to start its infancy, but at least we know that some implements are being employed to help ease the minds of the motoring public. If only law enforcement thought of doing the same thing a long time ago, then the eradication of unscrupulous enforcers could be curbed much easier now, but that’s beside the point.
