Porsche unveils production-ready Taycan Turbo GT with a new lap record

Porsche is extending its electric sports sedan lineup with the introduction of the Taycan Turbo GT and Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package. The latter, designed specifically for track use, ditches the rear seats to enhance its power-to-weight ratio.

The Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package recently clinched the title of fastest electric series-production car at the Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca in California on February 23, 2024. Porsche’s development driver, Lars Kern, clocked a remarkable time of 1:27.87min, setting a new record for road-approved electric cars.

Just prior to this achievement, a pre-production version of the same model established a new class record at the Nürburgring, with Kern behind the wheel once again, recording a lap time of 7:07.55 min on the Nordschleife. This time, Kern beat his previous record, set in August 2022, with a Taycan Turbo S Sport sedan equipped with the performance package by a staggering 26 seconds. It now stands as the current record for series-production electric cars and makes the Turbo GT the fastest four-door of any powertrain type on the Nürburgring.

According to Model Line Vice President Kevin Giek, these records showcase the exceptional track potential of the Taycan lineup, emphasizing the importance of a well-balanced package encompassing acceleration, braking, cornering grip, aerodynamics, stability, and fine-tuning.

The Taycan Turbo GT models boast improved longitudinal dynamics and introduce an innovative Attack Mode, offering up to 161 hp of additional power for 10 seconds at the touch of a button. This mode, optimized for track driving, mirrors the push-to-pass function seen in Porsche’s 99X racing cars competing in the Electric ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Enhancements in the powertrain department include new power electronics and a more potent rear-axle motor, elevating the overall system power to 778 hp. With Launch Control, overboost power can reach up to 1019 hp, or up to 1093 hp for two seconds, providing blistering acceleration figures.

The lightweight construction measures adopted by Porsche result in a weight reduction of up to 75 kg compared to the Taycan Turbo S. Carbon fiber components, including full bucket seats and exterior trims, contribute to this weight savings.

Standard features of the Taycan Turbo GT include Porsche Active Ride suspension with GT-specific tuning, lightweight ceramic brakes, and Matrix LED headlights. Optional upgrades include HD matrix LED headlights and a range of exterior paint finishes.

The Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package further enhances performance with additional aerodynamics measures and a weight reduction of approximately 70 kg. Its top speed increases to 305 km/h, and downforce reaches up to 220 kg thanks to a fixed rear wing.

Interior options include sporty Race-Tex features, full bucket seats, and a GT interior package. The Weissach package also offers exclusive customization options such as contrast stitching and interior packages in Volt Blue and GT Silver.

Seeing as the Taycan is doing very well locally, along with a demand of Porsche’s special models, we could assume that this model could indeed arrive here in the Philippines down the line.
