Mazda CX-80 PHEV

Mazda Philippines has introduced the CX-80, its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the country. The three-row SUV is offered in three variants priced from P4,180,000 to P4,280,000. It made its first local public appearance during the MICHELIN Guide awarding for Manila & Environs & Cebu.

“The Mazda CX-80 is our first-ever PHEV. It remains anchored in Japanese aesthetics with superior technology and features, including the signature driving performance that only a Mazda can deliver,” says Steven Tan, president of Mazda Philippines. “It remains a true expression of our crafted approach.”

Mazda’s e-Skyactiv PHEV system makes its Philippine debut in the CX-80. It pairs a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine with an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery. Mazda says the battery offers higher energy density, fast-charging capability and high power output, in a compact and lighter package.

Engine output is 192 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 261 Nm of torque. Intake tuning improves torque in the 1,500 to 3,000 rpm range, where most everyday driving happens. Meanwhile, the electric motor adds 175 horsepower and 270 Nm from zero rpm. Total system output is 327 PS and 500 Nm, which makes the CX-80 PHEV the most powerful Mazda sold in the Philippines. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. On electric power alone, it has up to 65 km of range under the WLTP standard.

The battery can recharge while driving using energy recovered during braking. A separate Charge mode lets the driver set a battery level to reach, which is useful before switching to EV mode. At home or in the office, a 7.2 kW AC charger fills the battery in 2.5 hours. A 3.5 kW portable charger plugged into a conventional 220-volt non-grounded outlet takes less than seven hours.

Power goes through a torque converter-less eight-speed automatic. Mazda says it transmits torque more directly, with close gear ratios and a simplified structure for smoother starts and gear changes, and lets the engine and motor blend independently at all speeds. An i-Activ AWD system, an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch setup biased toward the rear wheels, sends power to all four wheels. It also works with the friction brakes to split regenerative braking between the front and rear axles.

The CX-80 is built on Mazda’s Large Architecture Platform, which allows the battery pack to sit under the floor for a low center of gravity. It uses a longitudinally mounted engine and rear-wheel-drive layout, with front double wishbone and rear multi-link suspension. Mazda says the suspension is tuned for stability and comfort on rough city streets and undulating high-speed roads.

Mazda’s Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) is also fitted. When cornering under high G-force, the system brakes the inside rear wheel slightly to reduce body roll and pull the body downward. It also compares speed differences between the rear wheels to make vehicle movement more linear.

The CX-80 measures 4,990 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,710 mm tall, with a 3,120 mm wheelbase. It seats up to seven. Styling follows Mazda’s Kodo – Soul of Motion design language. Up front, a long hood reflects the rear-wheel-drive layout. Along the sides, extended windows and chrome moldings mark the third row, and an integrated roof rail adds to the visual length. Wheels are 20-inch high-gloss black units. At the rear, Mazda left out the exhaust garnish.

Melting Copper Metallic debuts on the CX-80. This Takuminuri color is described as resembling a lightly sandblasted copper surface that has been melted and hardened again. Other colors are Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Rhodium White and Jet Black Mica.

Cabin materials include Nappa leather and chrome detailing, with a choice of black or tan interiors. A thick console runs front to back, and the rear seat console has an integrated shape with metallic trim matching the front console and door trim.

Three displays face the driver: a 12.3-inch TFT LCD instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a large-window Active Driving Display. Passengers get a panoramic sunroof measuring 950 mm by 1,021 mm, three-zone climate control with vents reaching the third row, and integral rear door sunshades. A 12-speaker Bose sound system is standard. Its BassMatch cowl-side enclosures and a rear bass enclosure are meant to deliver tighter bass, reduce door buzz and improve dynamic range, clarity and image width.

Buyers can choose a three-person second-row bench for seven seats, or two captain’s chairs with a middle console for six seats. The second-row bench slides 120 mm and reclines from 15 to 33 degrees. Second-row shoulder room is 1,476 mm and headroom is 996 mm. Third-row seats are designed for occupants up to 1.70 m tall. Access is eased by a large door opening, a one-touch walk-in function for the second row, a wide, flat step floor and a hand grip built into the side trim.

Cargo capacity with all three rows up, including under-floor storage, is 258 liters. It grows to 687 liters with the third row folded, 1,221 liters with the second row folded and 1,971 liters up to the ceiling. Mazda reduced the height difference between the load floor and tailgate sill and removed wall irregularities for a cleaner cargo bay shape. A hands-free power tailgate, triggered by a sensor under the rear bumper, opens and closes with the user’s hands full.

Under its Mazda Proactive Safety philosophy, the CX-80 earned a Euro NCAP 5-star rating and was named Best in Class Large SUV by the organization. Standard i-Activsense features include Smart Brake Support (SBS) with vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian detection day and night, SBS Front Crossing, head-on collision mitigation and SBS Rear Crossing (SBS-R). Also standard are Lane-keep Assist (LAS), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK) with head-on traffic avoidance assist and Driver Attention Alert (DAA).

For the PHEV system, the chassis and body protect the high-voltage components and battery pack from collision impact. The battery housing is made of high-strength aluminum that resists cracking. If a collision is detected, the system automatically shuts off the high-voltage battery and discharges its energy.

The CX-80 is available in three variants: the 2.5L 8AT AWD PHEV at Php4,180,000, the PHEV Premium at Php4,230,000 and the PHEV Exclusive at Php4,280,000. Each price includes a portable AC charger that accepts up to 7.2 kW.

Every unit comes with a five-year Free Service Plan covering periodic maintenance at six-month or 10,000-km intervals, up to five years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. A three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and an eight-year hybrid battery warranty are also included.
